The chime options were the reason that I chose this clock. They can be set on the bottom. However, while I was adamant about finding a clock which chimes the hours, I now think I would be just as happy with only the Big Ben chimes on the hour, which, ironically, is the one option the clock does not have. Big Ben chimes are always followed by the chiming of the hours. That's a lot of chiming! I have chosen just the Bim-Bam hours instead.
The volume range is from very loud (for a whole house?) to soft (for a small room). My clock sits in the hall and the volume is on medium high. The chimes sound pretty natural and very pleasant.
Don't see anything that could be considered a short-coming. I'm 100% happy with it.
