New Philips Sa2vbe08k/17 1.5 Inch Gogear Vibe Mp3 Video Player With Fullsound 8 Gb Review

New Philips Sa2vbe08k/17 1.5 Inch Gogear Vibe Mp3 Video Player With Fullsound 8 Gb

Purchased this NEW Philips Vibe 8GB as backup for my other two mp3 players (earlier version 4gb Vibe and 4gb Sansa Clip+) and for the ability to play FLAC encoded music.
Compared to the earlier version of Philips Vibe, this new one have a better and more intuitive menu navigation. The navigation pad now have the Play/Pause button in the middle. The aluminum case give it a solid, well built feel. Clearly, Philips did his homework and corrected the physical and navigation drawbacks of the old one. But they failed in another equaly important aspect. Sound quality!
This new one sounds harsh, dull, opaque, lifeless compared to the Sansa Clip+ and older GoGear Vibe. I used the same mp3 song on all three units for and unbiased comparison. The Sansa Clip+ gives the best reproduction. The sound is lifelike, detailed, with presence and dimension. The older version of GoGear Vibe sounds more detailed and crisp than the new Vibe but lacks the presence and dimension of the Sansa Clip+. Bass reproduction on both Vibes is lifeless compared to the Clip+.
Then compared a FLAC encoded song on the new Vibe and the Sansa Clip+ (the old Vibe does not decode FLAC). The Sansa Clip+ played it with the same dimension, presense and detail as the source CD. In contrast, The new Vibe played that same FLAC encoded song with a harsh, unnatural tone. Without any dimension and presence at all in sound.
Full Sound feature. This feature is suposed to retore the life and detail of music but in real world testing, I didn't found any improvement in sound. First, it disables the equalizer feature. Leaving you without any tonal adjustment. And second, I didn't noticed any sound quality improvement in the areas of detail, definition and presence. It may increase in some way the dynamic range but compared to the Sansa Clip+, the Vibe Full Sound still sounds lifeless! It is a pity that the new improvements have been overshadowed by the inferior sound quality.

After using this for a month, I'm still very pleased with it. The pros far outweigh the cons here.
First and best, this thing sounds GOOD. There are 5 tone presets to choose from. The ported speaker is able to produce amazing sound quality. 5 stars for this alone.
Clock displays time, and when no music is playing, the date. Automatic DST switch. Backlight has 4 levels one of which is off. Backlight color and display text is low contrast, hard for me to see.
Battery backup keeps all your settings.
It remembers quite a bit: If you hit the power button, whatever you were listening to is restored, be it MP3 or radio. If you hit the sleep button, it applies the volume setting in use the last time it turned itself off. If you hit the play button, it plays, from the beginning, whatever MP3 was playing when last turned off.
Sleep times of 120, 90, 60, 30 and 15 mins. After setting the sleep mode, if you click the sleep button again, it displays the time remaining before cutoff. When its time, the sound is gently faded out.
Random and repeat settings for MP3 play. Folder button so you can browse memory contents. ID tag info scrolls while track is played. Select SD slot or USB port for source. Line in for other stereo input. Recessed well for USB drives, with a cover. SD card sticks up a few millimeters from it's slot.
Full featured remote. Yes, it is handy if the clock is just out of reach on the nightstand.
Wake to: radio, mp3, buzzer. There is no way to select "wake to random mp3", but I get around that by putting a 3 second silent mp3 in the memory, select that as the wakeup track, and set for random play.
12 station memories for the radio, arranged in 3 banks, 2 for FM stations and 1 for AM.
The cons:
FM reception is so so. The stations I can get all sound good, but can't pull in distant ones.
The buttons on the front [sleep, power, alarms, wake to, radio preset bank selecter] are impossible to distinguish by touch. Adding a dot of hot glue to a few of them helped quite a bit.
The volume control feels like nothing is there. It works fine, just feels weird.
Can't read the time unless I put on my glasses.
___________
If I didn't already own one, I'd buy it again!

Philips USA AJL308 Clock Radio with 7-Inch TFT LCD Color Display and USB/SD Card Slot Review

Philips USA AJL308 Clock Radio with 7-Inch TFT LCD Color Display and USB/SD Card Slot
Average Reviews:

There is a lot to love about this product. It's sleek. It's stylish. It's bright, bold and clear. (It can be dimmed!) It's a clock-radio with two independent alarms that also plays audio files (.mp3 and .wma), video (mpeg4 and divx codices) and photo slide shows (.jpg only). It has built-in "relaxation" sounds to help you fall asleep. It has so much going for it! And just when you think it can't get any better...
It doesn't get better. It slips a little. You start thinking to yourself, "If only..." and "Why didn't they just take the next step?" Why isn't there a tiny bit of built-in memory so that I don't need a SD card or USB stick to be attached to change the cute-but-becoming-annoying default photo? Why can't I select an audio file on the SD or USB as my alarm music? Why only three built-in sounds for the "relaxation" music? Why isn't there an AM tuner? Why isn't there a headphone jack? Why can I only display JPEG-format images? For a widescreen 7" LCD picture frame, why is the resolution only 480 x 234? Why isn't there a back-up battery?
This is such a near-perfect little gadget that it's painful to see how close Philips came to making the best device on the market. Yet despite these flaws, it is still so wonderful that it demands four stars. Lucky for Philips, there don't seem to be any viable alternatives with all of the features it does have at this price point... yet.
And regarding the day-of-the-week issue: Philips posted a firmware update on their Web site on September 14, 2007, that fixes this issue. Visit the Philips Web site, type in "AJL308" to find the product page, select the Support link tab (just above and to the right of the product image), and scroll down to the Software section. There is a PDF read-me file and a ZIP file with the actual firmware update. Read the PDF and carefully follow its directions to update the firmware. You'll need a USB drive to transfer the firmware update to your AJL308, and it takes several minutes to complete the update, but once it's done the day of the week should be correct.

I used to want a clock for my study table since I looked at some expensive writers/lawyers/agents furniture catalog that my brother discarded.I felt my study table was incomplete without such a clock. It is larger than what I expected but it is still very nice and stylish. I like that sea through lucite. And it is easy to set.

Altaz AZICR101 3.5-Inch Internet Clock Radio with Net Applications (White) Review

I was looking for something like this for a while now but nobody made it, so I was happy to hear of the Altaz Internet Clock Radio. I was a bit worried though when it arrived. First off, it's very small which normally isn't a bad thing but with a touch screen it makes it that much more difficult to use. Also, it feels very cheaply made. Second, the touch screen. This touch screen is absolutely horrible. Even after you do the initial calibration it doesn't respond well at all. Some of the menu buttons are so small and close together you end up hitting the wrong one each time or it just doesn't do anything. Lastly, if this is supposed to be an alarm clock (which means it will be on your night stand), why the heck is the screen so ridiculously bright (even on the lowest brightness setting)? At night it lit up half of my room. I had to turn the device completely around so it wasn't facing me, so what's the point of even having it. If this product was only $20 then it might be worth it to someone but definitely not at nearly $100. Needless to say, I have returned it.

Philips AJ3231 Mirror Finish Clock Radio Review

Philips AJ3231 Mirror Finish Clock Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
*Gorgeous contemporary design with mirror and stainless steel look. The LED display magically floats in the mirror.
*Very low level brightness yet perfectly legible and without glare. Many alarm clocks are way too bright even on dim settings. If the brightness of alarm clocks bothers you, this clock should work well for you.
*Easy to figure out without instructions which makes it a viable option for guest bedrooms.
Cons:
*When adjusting the alarms, there is no indication on the LED display which alarm you are adjusting. Compounding this problem is when you turn on an alarm, there is no way to see what time the alarm is set for. It's far too easy to adjust one alarm and turn on the other by mistake. This is a MAJOR negative. The display also doesn't tell you if the alarm is set for buzzer or radio. The lack of information on the display makes it impossible to adjust in the dark.
*No fast reverse. To adjust times, there is a fast forward button and a slow reverse button. I like clocks that also have fast reverse which makes changing alarm times easier and quicker.
*Slide controls are small and difficult to use. The distance between settings is very small so it can be frustrating.
*Buzzer volumes are not adjustable. Alarm 1 is set at a low volume which is very quiet and might not work for sound sleepers. Alarm 2 is slightly louder but it's still quieter than any other alarm clock I've used. With both alarms, you do have the option of waking up with radio which is volume adjustable and gets very loud.
*No gradually increasing alarm volume.
*Radio is not digital. Not a major issue but the dial is small so it's hard to know what station you're on.
*No nap function.
*The audio cable in the back doesn't stay in the holder and flops around annoyingly. I have since cut it off.
*Snooze not adjustable (set at 7 minutes).
Overall, this alarm clock would work well in a guest bedroom where style is of paramount importance. For your main alarm clock, you should consider something with better functionality.
