Powers of 2 Binary Clock Review

Powers of 2 Binary Clock

A present from my son. It gives a new way of looking at what time it is--there are analog timepieces, there are digital timepieces, and now there are binary timepieces. If a light is on only in the lowest row=1, light on only in second row=2, light on only in lowest two rows=3, light on only in third row=4, and so on. You can look at this clock as a simple amusement about different ways of seeing what time it is, and you can look at it and use it to help you contemplate how humans think/talk in different languages, and how those humans might think differently inside and never realize the many ways it is possible that other humans may think and perceive the world differently. After all, this clock is about telling one basic thing, time, in a different way than you ever have before. What about all the other experiences we humans may look at in different ways/ OK, down from the heavy stuff, it's a neat toy to put on your desk, yet still a reminder that there are a lot of different ways of looking at such basic things as "what time it is".

This is a great and unique gift. The lights on the clock each have a value, and when you add them up you can tell the time. Those that work with computers all day long probably know how to read binary code.If not, it only takes a few minutes to learn and after a bit of practice you can glance at the clock and tell the time with little or no brain work required. This item is a great ice breaker as those not in the know have no clue what it is.After you tell them, they want one!A great gift without question.

TIX Color Code LED Clock, Black Review

TIX Color Code LED Clock, Black

This clock is definitely a conversation starter!
Quality of build seems good. The brushed aluminum faceplate is nice. LED's aren't too bright or too dim (they are adjustable). Detailed instructions are included.
If you're interested in this clock then you are probably drawn to it for the visual appeal alone. It tells the time. Nothing more, nothing less (no alarm or AM/PM designation). Watching it change every four seconds (can be adjusted) is just fun. Once you get used to it, it's really easy to tell the time at a glance.
The only downsides (and these aren't really negatives) are that it is somewhat small in size and if you have bad eyes you are going to have trouble counting the blocks. Then again...if you have bad eyes you would have trouble with most LED/digital clocks anyways. ;x
This is one of my favorite purchases I've made in quite some time and I highly recommend it.

To the uninitiated, it looks like just an attractive piece of contemporary LED art. But to the clued-in, it's one clever clock. Once you crack the "code" of its display (dramatically revealed in the sentence), you'll see how easy and fun the TIX Clock is to read. You simply count the number of colored, LED-illuminated squares in each of the four fields on the brushed chrome faceplate! The fields correspond to the four numbers on a digital clock. So in the picture at left, the time is 12:36. Get it? And whoever coined the phrase "time stood still" wasn't referring to the TIX! While it does have a "static" mode, you can also set it to change which squares are illuminated in each field every second or minute, creating an ever-changing pattern that always indicates the correct time. Whether adorning a desktop or mounted on a wall, the TIX Clock gives time a new twist. Includes AC adapter. 10-1/4"x3"x1". Black.

Has a red backlight to the clock face. No radio (a bit disappointing at this price-point).
Articulating arms, hands, legs (I don't remember if the head swivels, but I think not).
Tap the head to light up the backlight or turn off the alarm/snooze.
Not brick-compatible with other products from the same brand.
About 8 inches tall.

Powers of 2 BCD Clock Review

Great gift and conversation piece.
Pros: Small desktop device that catches the attention of everyone passing by. A fun challenge for the non-computer/math person.
Cons: It is sometimes difficult to read the time in low light as the positions of the LEDS are hard to identify (the illuminated LEDs are easily seen.) It could use a backup battery (although setting the time is easy)

We know you're dying to know, so here's how to read this unique clock. It defaults to using BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) mode. In BCD mode, the time is read left to right, with two columns assigned to hours, minutes and seconds. The four rows, starting at the bottom, represent values of 1, 2, 4 and 8 moving upward. So in the example shown here, the time is 10:48:36; the leftmost column has one bottom row LED lit, and thus the value is "1", and the next column has no LED lit, so it is zero; that makes it 10. The LED in the third column is the third row, and thus is "4", the LED lit in the fourth column is the fourth row up, and thus is "8", so those two columns read "48". The fifth column has the "1" LED lit and the "2" LED lit, so it adds up to "3", and the sixth column has the "2" and "4" LEDs lit, so it adds up to 6, with the result of "36"; thus at the tone, the time will be: 10:48:36. You can also set up "true binary" mode, where the bottom row is seconds, the second row is minutes and the third row is hours. Just think of the enjoyable hours you will spend trying to read the hours on the binary clock. It's enough to make your head spin in a very pleasant manner-and all that fun is included with the clock at no extra cost!
