I'm usually in another room, listening to music or watching TV, while I have food cooking. I've tried out a number of timers, but this is only one that has an alarm that's really as loud as advertised. I tried an OXO (usually a quality product), but they decided to extend their "soft" design trademark to the timer buttons. A disaster. Soft, mushy buttons, with no tactile feedback to let you know when they've been properly pressed. Then I tried a timer with a remote alert unit. Way too complicated. You had to store the remote in the back of the base when not in use, or the battery would run down. Also, the remote didn't constantly check for a signal. It could be almost a full minute late in alerting you that time was up. That was another battery saving feature.
The ThermoWorks timer (made by a company that also makes industrial grade temperature meters) has none of those limitations. First off, it IS big. It's about as tall and wide as an older model Blackberry, and twice as thick as an iPhone. But you're going to attach it to your stove or 'fridge, not carry it around in your pocket, so that's not really an issue. The LED display is an inch tall, with half-height display for the seconds. The buttons are well labeled, and give both audible and tactile feedback when you press one. Press the start button without entering a time, and it recalls the last time period you entered. Very handy. My only suggestion is that different colors be used for the Start/Recall and the Stop/Clear buttons, to better set them apart from the others.
The alarm is as loud as advertised. If you can't hear this one, you're probably not going to find a timer to suit you. I often use this with my microwave/convection oven, even though it has it's own alarm. It only beeps once, so if you miss it, it's not going to tell you again. The ThermoWorks alarm beeps continuously, until you turn it off.
The magnetic attachment is clever. Most timers have a cheap rubberized magnetic strip glued to the back of the unit. This has 4 very strong (neodymium, perhaps?) magnets, set at a right angle to the back, free-floating (to some extent) in slots. This allows the magnets to make contact with whatever object you're attaching it to, but then retract into the unit's body so it sitting perfectly flat. That's thoughtful engineering.
Downsides? It takes a screwdriver to change the batteries. The screw needs a retaining washer so it doesn't get lost. There's also a rubber gasket in the battery compartment that keeps the unit splash-proof. It's not held in place, so that another thing that can get lost during a battery change. But I don't expect to have to do that more than once every couple of years, so it's not much of an issue.
If you're looking for a multi-timer, or something with a temp probe, etc., then look elsewhere. This performs one function, but does it exceedingly well.
