Sunrise SAD Therapy Light Box w/ Dawn Simulator Review

Sunrise SAD Therapy Light Box w/ Dawn Simulator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third light box, and the main reason I ordered it was because I wanted to try a dawn simulator. The dawn simulator really hasn't helped me to get up, but that could just be me. I do like the fact that this light box is small and puts off a white light (I have a blue light, which I hate), but overall, I cannot recommend it.
The only reason I do not like this light is because the interface on the box is horrendously bad. There aren't a lot of options, and yet, I have to keep the manual closeby so I can lookup how to use it every time I want to do something. I couldn't even figure out how to turn the light off in the morning. I now only use it as a regular light box, but even that is a problem because I have to click, click, click through all the options to set the timer even though I set it to the same time every time I use it. Finally, to change one menu option, I have to go through every single option every time (i.e. it won't let you exit the menu early).
Just FYI, I am an engineer, so it's not that I am illogical or can't figure things out. This interface is just so horrible that it is frustrating and makes me wants to throw the thing out the window. The only reason I don't is because of how much money I spent on it.
Pass this one by... I think there are probably better light boxes on the market (my favorite is no longer produced or I would recommend it). I also would not recommend this as a dawn simulator - try one of the others on the market.

The battery lid doesn't fit well. It falls off and it's just not that well made. Other than that, when it's sitting there, it's very cute and the clock works just fine.

Morning Sunrise System Dawn Dusk Sun Alarm Clock SRS200US Review

Morning Sunrise System Dawn Dusk Sun Alarm Clock SRS200US
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start by saying I was very skeptical about this lamp. I have tried MANY similar lamps and clocks in the past with poor results. I have tried gently chiming alarm clocks. I have tried gradually lighting alarm clocks. I have tried soft music alarm clocks. Every one I have tried has ended up with really annoying noises, water torture noises, cheesy construction, and poor lighting. I had really pretty much given up.
Then I gave this one a try.
First off, you are paying a substantial amount of money for this item. There is the saying "you get what you pay for". This is STURDY. Where other lamps are like cheap camping lanterns, this one is very sturdy. Yes, it's made of plastic - I imagine metal would heat up like the dickens! It is very solid, though, and holds up to a lot of use.
Next, it doesn't have cheezy built in sounds - a problem with many other units I tried. It doesn't go with chimes which are meant to be gentle but which you would slam into a wall after a few days. Instead, it is *brilliant* - it uses a MP3 card!!! So yes you can go with their built in sounds of ocean waves etc. if you wish. But if you want to wake up to Jean Luc Picard's soft voice, you can do that! If you want to wake up to a series of Peter Gabriel tunes, you're all set! Heck, make up a series of playlists and have one for weekend wake-ups, one for work-day wake-ups and even have a special set for that special-meeting-day wake up inspiration. Whatever your goal, this thing is perfectly customizable.
So, the construction is great and the music / sound is about as perfect as you can get. How about the light? I have done a TON of research on light and sleeping. Your eyeballs sense light through the closed eyelids. It's why so many of us have trouble falling asleep in a lit room. With this, the room really does go from quite dark to VERY bright in a slow, gradual way. That is so much better for your health than being jolted awake! It really does wake you up too. I highly recommend getting thick curtains, double shades, and then letting this light wake you up when YOU say it is time to. Take control of your health.
Speaking of which, I cannot talk enough about how critical it is for good health to get a good night's sleep. Swing by my site for numerous articles on this topic. A good night's sleep lets your muscles rebuild, lets your stress levels reduce, lets your brain recharge. It is really critical for health. And yet so many of us do not get it! We barely sleep well - and then we jolt ourselves awake in the morning. This system is an investment in your health. It gets you to wake up in the most healthy manner you can. If you can't fall asleep before then - there are many websites including mine which can help you achieve that goal too.
Really, make it a priority in your life. You need good sleep.
The clock lets you set a DIFFERENT time every single day of the week - so you can set it up for a rotating schedule and for later weekend times. Note that for healthy sleep you should try not to vary your schedule TOO wildly. While sleeping until noon on weekends may feel cool, it's not very good for your overall pattern. It's much better to maintain some sort of a regular timeline for your body to get used to.
Do I have any complaints? The memory card is one of the small SD cards - and my Dell had numerous problems using its built in card slots. It took me weeks to get the memory card to work. However, that wasn't the clock's fault! It was my computer's fault. So if you want to play with the memory card, make sure you get your computer or laptop working well with SD cards and test that out. If you don't have a built in reader, get yourself an adapter.
Still, again, you can hardly blame the clock for an issue with my computer. And I could have used its built in sounds if I wanted - I was just wanting to wake up with my own music, with my own sequence. Once I got that worked on, I was in seventh heaven. This is everything it says it is. Heck, I got it to turn off its "back light" for the clock to get the room super dark. I'm sure people want that back light on so they can see the clock numbers at night. So it is the ultimate in adjustable.
Highly, highly recommended, and feel free to write me if you have any other questions about it. Given the number of other junk clocks I've tried over the years, my quest has ended.

Sunrise Dawn Sun Simulator Alarm Clock Review

Sunrise Dawn Sun Simulator Alarm Clock
Average Reviews:

I love this product!
I have had two sunrise lamps; both have died when their plastic buttons gave out after 4-5 years of use. I decided to replace that bulky lamp with this product, which uses a regular lamp (I can determine the wattage and have a prettier lamp!), takes up very little bedside table space and costs about 20% less.
This is a far better product than the all-in-one sunrise lamp. I appreciate that the backlight can be turned off completely on this unit. The clock has all the features I loved in the bulky lamps: I can vary the time for sunrise and sunset and it includes a security setting for when I am away. Turning on and off the lamp also is far easier with this unit than with the all-in-ones.
The only flaw in this clock is in the design of its cords/plugs. The clock was designed in the UK, where large cords are the norm and every plug is grounded. The wires on this are way too big, the plug is three-prong and the weight of the wire and can make the unit somewhat unsteady on a table top. I have mine on the edge of the bedside table, which is perfect for me, allows the wires to hang over and keeps the unit very stable. I am happy to live with this minor drawback -- this is a wonderful product and I am delighted to have found it!

GE 11152 LCD Acrylic Clock Night Light, Color Changing LED with Calendar Review

GE 11152 LCD Acrylic Clock Night Light, Color Changing LED with Calendar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great space saving idea for the bathroom. Everyone needs a clock in the bathroom to keep on schedule in the morning, and why not integrate it with the nightlight to keep it off the wet surfaces.
But there are a few design problems. One is that the LCD needs to be looked at from directly in front and above for maximum contrast; when you look from a side the display has lower contrast which makes it harder to read. And given that most people would plug this into an outlet on the side of a bathroom sink, it's normal to look at it from the side, so this is a serious issue.
Another issue is that it requires two LR44 watch batteries for the clock. Why should something that plugs into the wall require batteries to be changed every few years? They should have powered the clock from the wall as well, with a capacitor so it doesn't lose the time during short power failures.
The final design issue is that the backlight is relatively uneven, and defaults to a disco-like sequential color mode that nobody would want. You have to press the Light button seven or so times to get it to white light each time you plug it in. And the white light isn't as pure white as other nightlights. It just feels a bit cheap.
The battery cover is made of a low grade easily deformable plastic, easily stripped by turning the coin in the groove too far, rendering this device useless.
I bought three of these as Christmas stocking stuffers, and I had issues with all three. On the first the instructions didn't explain that the battery cover is already in the open position (coin groove vertical) as shipped, so I ruined the coin groove by trying to turn it in the direction of the "Open" arrow as the instructions suggested. The instructions don't mention that you need to use a screwdriver to pop the cover out even after it's in the open position.
On the second one, there was a loose connection problem where only part of the last digit worked unless I applied twisting pressure on the screen with my hand.
On the third one, the package was missing the batteries and instructions.
Luckily I was able to combine parts from all three units to make two good ones, but I would not recommend this product due to the quality control issues.

SOLEIL ULTIMA SA2010 Sunrise Simulator Sun Alarm Clock Review

SOLEIL ULTIMA SA2010 Sunrise Simulator Sun Alarm Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wish I could have shopped for this kind of item in person so you could see how big, how bright, generally how it works.
The light itself doesn't wake you. The beeping alarm (or radio) wakes you. In no way should this product be advertised as "an exciting new way to start the day." The total effect of this item is when you wake up to your alarm, there's a low watt bedside light on in your dark room. That's it. Ok, so you didn't sense the light come on because it was gradual... but the end result is not impressive. Even at the peak of the "sunrise," it doesn't light up the room or make you believe you're waking up to light.
Doesn't seem like the technology in this product is complex enough to warrant the price. I bought a timer for my bedside lamp for $5.99 at my local hardware and will see how it compares.
On the plus side, shipping was speedy and it arrived ahead of schedule. I bought it through amazon.com so I could possibly read reviews and have some confidence about ease of return. Amazon's list price, new, was $77 compared to the Soleil website's listing of $165, which is a laughable price point for what this is.

Morning Sunrise System Dawn Dusk Sun Alarm Clock SRS100US Review

Morning Sunrise System Dawn Dusk Sun Alarm Clock SRS100US
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this system about a month ago after researching a number of dawn simulators on the market. I liked the fact that it used my own lamp as the source of light -- I already have a bedside lamp that matches my decor and didn't want to replace it with a monstrosity (most of the others are really ugly); moreover, I'd read that many simulators that contain their own light source don't get bright enough to be effective. My bedroom is extremely dark, and without an alarm I just can't wake up on my own. Since I work at home and set my own hours, though, an alarm clock that jars me awake and leaves me groggy all day seemed like overkill. I was hoping a dawn simulator would allow me to wake up peacefully -- just earlier.
I was a bit skeptical when I opened the box -- it was larger and a lot lighter than I thought it would be; for $115 I expected it to feel more substantial. It has a very thick forked cord coming out of it that's too heavy for the actual clock -- it would drag it off my nightstand if I didn't anchor it around my lamp -- and also too short: I needed an extension cord even though my outlet is only a couple of feet away.
I found the system somewhat confusing to set -- it's necessary, for example, to set an alarm time for every day of the week, rather than simply setting one time that could be changed if necessary. This might be nice for people with revolving schedules, but I find it rather cumbersome. I also find it awkward that it automatically starts the sunset feature if you set the alarm when the light is on -- so unless I set my alarm with another light on in the room (or leave the alarm permanently set, which I've been doing lately), it will start to dim the light while I'm reading. Perhaps I just haven't figured this out, though -- it seems like there's a lot I'm still learning about it. I don't know, for instance, how the previous reviewer managed to set the brightness of the backlight -- I've found the control to change the contrast of the numbers (which seems sort of useless) but not the bright green backlight. The first night I slept badly, thinking that green light was too bright, but by the second night I'd already gotten used to it.
Despite all this, however, I really love this dawn simulator. I had a morning meeting the first morning I used it, so I set the buzzer as well as the simulator, but found I really didn't need it -- I woke up a few minutes before the light had reached full brightness. I waited for the buzzer, just to hear what it would sound like, and was glad to hear it wasn't obnoxious -- definitely loud enough to wake someone, but not to set their teeth on edge. What's more, I woke up refreshed! With my traditional alarm clock, I'd find myself pressing "snooze" over and over, but with this system I really did feel awake. I find that the 30 minute setting, though, is the only one that works for me -- if I set it for a longer time (the system allows 15, 30, 60 or 90 minute settings) I wake up too early and then fall back asleep again, and it's harder to wake up the second time. However, on the 30-minute setting I think it's wonderful.

After I managed to break the globe on my beloved Biobrite Sunrise Alarm Clark and was unable to find a replacement, I settled for the Soleil out of desperation and against my better judgment. It looked way too small to wake even a mite and, boy, was I right! "Compact" does not even begin to describe the Soleil's diminutive dimensions. Now, to be fair, if you happen to be a light sleeper in a small space, and you're facing the clock with the bulb aimed squarely at your eyelids, and you happen to respond to its rather anemic glow, then maybe, just maybe, it will wake you up. But if not, you better use the beeper function or late to work you're gonna be. Better yet, buy a REAL sunrise alarm clock and not this overpriced toy.

Well this clock is definitely peaceful, especially if you use it at night to wind down. The nature sounds are realistic and the "Zen Melody" makes you feel like you're in a Japanese garden. I don't think the aromatherapy is worth it because you can smell it without heating it, so the room smells like coffee when you go to bed as well as when you wake up. Also, the scents that come with it just don't smell very good...I definitely recommend using your own aromatherapy oil. If the light and nature sounds don't wake you up, the alarm definitely will. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!!! So loud it nearly gives me a heart attack! All-in-all a cool device, but the cost is probably double what it's worth.

GPX C280 AM/FM Sunrise Clock Radio (Multi-Color) Review

GPX C280 AM/FM Sunrise Clock Radio (Multi-Color)
Average Reviews:

I like waking with the sun, but in the winter, the sun comes long after I have to get up. I've thought about a sunrise clock for a while, but I can't bring myself to pay $100 for one. This one was affordable, so I purchased it and crossed my fingers. It has been fantastic.
The light does come on relatively quickly-- over the course of a few seconds, but it definitely helps with waking me. The light is a bit on the bluish end of the spectrum as opposed to a "warm sunrise" but it gets the job done well. The radio ramps up the sound so I no longer feel like I'm jolted out of bed. It has surprisingly good reception and really good sound for the price.
It took me a while to figure out how to program it (I didn't read the instructions), but it was quite doable.
I highly recommend this.
