Germ Guardian H-3010 Ultra-Sonic Humidifier Review

Humidifier
As I write this there have been numerous reviews of this product. Some of them very glowing and some of them quite negative. I will try to avoid either extreme and focus on some things I haven't seen reviewed yet.
*SIZE: When I opened the box I was truly surprised. In the photos this looks to be the size of a table radio. Wrong! It is easily twice the size and not easily placed on most night stands.
*SOUNDS: As claimed, the unit is virtually quiet in operation.
*VISUAL: Nice very heavy-grade plastic construction, nice packaging. Most drug-store humidifiers are very thin all plastic, this unit feels well built and solid. Cool retro look to it.
*CONTROLS: Everything you would want or need, EXCEPT for one. Read on for details.
*USER MANUAL: Pretty basic. Misses a lot of important details, like what is that center column and do you remove it to fill the tank, because it seems to want to be removable for some reason. And the chrome thing at the top ... is it supposed to rotate to direct the mist in different directions? Wouldn't it be nice if the manufacturer told us it was okay to do that?
*MISTING: After all, that's what you buy a unit like this for. Well, it's true that some very cheap units can put out a stronger mist, but remember this is an ultrasonic unit, which has numerous benefits (like no wicking filter). The mist can be adjusted from "just barely there" to a heavy mist that honestly scared me every time I entered the room that I was seeing smoke from a fire.
*EFFICIENCY: I filled the tank and had it on the entire first night. In the morning it looked like the tank was empty and I thought that's just about what I would expect. However, looking at the tank again I realized that the water level had only gone down slightly. It turns out the tank is so large that I have only had to fill it a couple of times a week. I consider that excellent.
*GOOD THINGS: I have had several humidifiers and was disgusted by the mold and mildew that grew on the wicking filter. This is healthy? Ultrasonic humidifiers work a different way and tend to be cleaner. This unit takes that one step beyond and I have confidence I am breathing air that is as clean as possible out of a humidifier, especially if I clean it out occasionally.
*BAD THINGS: The evil BEEP sound every time you push a button! If you have a sleeping partner they will NOT sleep for long if you need to make any adjustments. That goes for people trying to sleep anywhere in your house. The beep volume should be 2% of what it is. Since the manufacturer was thoughtful enough to include a mode that turns the disco lights off if you prefer while sleeping, they should have included a switch to turn off the beep. This is not unique to this product, several Chinese-made consumer electronics products ranging from toasters to food steamers to clothes irons have a beeper that all seem to made by one diabolical company who also makes industrial smoke alarm beepers. The volume and tone are unnecessarily loud. This humidifier doesn't even need to beep at you in the privacy of your bedroom, the status lights are enough.
*EASE OF OPERATION: Why does EVERY humidifier have to have a tank that you remove, turn upside down, and try to fill under a faucet? What is wrong with a fixed tank and a cap like the gas cap on your car that you twist off and use a pitcher to fill? There would be far less chance of leakage, and it would be much easier to fill. Kudos to the manufacturer on this one in that the tank is made of heavy-duty plastic with a strong, secure carrying handle. But once you get it to the sink, that carrying handle makes it impossible to hold or lay flat, so you somehow have to try to balance the entire tank while filling it, without dropping it as it gets increasingly heavier. Then there is that flimsy spring valve that every humidifier seems to have. There just has to be a better way. The good news is that mine hasn't dripped more than a few tiny drops and is totally drip-free in operation.
*DOES IT WORK? After a few nights running it at a medium speed with the bedroom door closed, I find I wake up with less of a dry throat and breathing easier. I feel more rested as well. I live in one of the driest places in the country and I think this is a very effective humidifier. I am considering buying another for the office where I spend much of my day.
SUMMARY: WAY larger than it looks. Excellent cold and warm misting. Extensive controls. Premium construction. Large water tank. Cool, retro styling, doesn't look like a medical device. Virtually silent operation. Sketchy instruction manual. Insanely loud function beeps when buttons are pushed. Could be easier to fill.
RATING: Having researched humidifiers extensively I rate this as a solid 4. What kept it from a 5 is primarily price ... this is at the stratosphere of the market and, while you get more value that the cheap drugstore units, no humidifier should cost over a hundred. I also feel it is necessary to deduct a point to give the message to the manufacturer that the loud confirmation beeps are not necessary and they are really annoying.

Honeywell TS33C Temperature and Humidity Sensor with LCD Review

Honeywell TS33C Temperature and Humidity Sensor with LCD
Average Reviews:

I bought this to add to my Honeywell TM005X Wireless Thermo-Hygrometer which can monitor up to 3 remote stations.
I had purchased a wireless therm-hygro unit from WalMart earlier this year, but wasn't impressed with the quality and their accuracy. Took them back and ordered the TM005X with this additional remote. IMHO, the Honeywell units are much better.
I have the base station and 2 remotes. I've installed new foam insulation and an unvented roof in my new remodel. I use them to monitor temp and humidity in my basement, main floor and attic.
You line them up in the same room and the temps are all within 1 to 1.5 degs and the RH are within 2% to 3% of each other. I haven't calibrated the units yet, but so far I'd consider them a pretty good value.

WEATHER STATION KEY CHAIN Review

WEATHER STATION KEY CHAIN
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a cool little gadget with a good variety of functions packed into a small case. The main display shows the weather forecast, although I have no idea how it gets it. Also shown is the time, date, day of the week, temperature and humidity level. Up here in Buffalo, NY, we're always interested in the humdity level in summer . It has a built in temperature and humidity sensor.
Anyway, the device also functions as an LED flashlight that illuminates about a 2 to 3 foot circular area. It shows the moon phase as well, if that's important to you. It has an alarm feature with a 4-cycle snooze. It comes with a conventional keyring and also a carabiner. I just used the carabiner to attach it to my crossbody handbag. It also shows the minimum and maximum temperatures in the range -58F to 158F. There's a very small compass on the reverse side. Small but readable. It beeps twice very quietly on the hour and I'm not sure how to turn that off or even if I can. But the beep is very polite and quiet. It takes 3 small batteries, and they were included and installed, a nice touch. To activate it, you pull out a little paper tab that must allow the batteries to make contact with whatever.
You can set the clock for 12 or 24 hour format. You also can display the temperature in degrees F or C. The calendar goes up to the year 2052. If the device gets confused, there's a recessed button on the back to reset it to the defaults.
The body is red plastic and it has a black faceplate with a typical LCD display. I thought I read somewhere that the case is ABS plastic, but can't verify that. It comes with a little pamphlet that explains all the functions pretty well. The back of the case screws on, so you'll need a teeny-tiny screwdriver to change the batteries. But don't you have one on your Swiss army knife? LOL. I like to be prepared, so I do carry a Swiss army knife and a small multitool as well. This little gizmo fits right into my collection. I guess I've been watching too much "Survivorman" and "Man vs Wild." Nevertheless, a handy little gadget. In case you're interested, the humidity here at the moment is 55%.

Chaney Indoor Thermometer and Humidity Gauge Review

Chaney Indoor Thermometer and Humidity Gauge

Bought 2 of these the other day. Opened them up, put in the battery, and they were ready to go. I bought two of them so I could install them in each of my childrens bedrooms so I could tell the range of the temp and humidity each of thier rooms. First I put these next to my house thermostat which has a current temp and humidity displayed. After 1 hour of being in the same room right next to the thermostat both of the Cheney units read exactly what the temp was, and the humidity on both units were the reading the exact same (7 units higher) then my house thermostat. I don't know if my house unit is accurate or not but at least the two Cheney units read the same for temp & humidity. If they read differently than each other than I would say they weren't accurate but since both read the exact same things I give them two thumbs up and agree this is a great buy, especially since it displays the current temp and humidity and displays the daily low/high for each. Great Product!!!! Small, lightweight, has magnet on back to stick to fridge or can use clip to attach it to belt, or anything it can clip to. It also can be placed on a desk, shelf, etc but standing it on end with the attached stilt.

Honeywell TM005X Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer Review

Honeywell TM005X Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was most interested in the humidity measurement. I conducted a calibration****(See update at end of review) with a sling psychrometer. A sling psychrometer measures wet bulb/dry bulb temperature and is the least expensive (albeit a bit tedious to use) and most accurate way to determine relative humidity (RH).
I needed to know relative humidity for curiosity indoors and for a chamber in my basement used to dry cure sausage (I needed a 70%RH environment). The Honeywell unit was spot on with the sling psychrometer (and temp. was accurate as well).
The unit is new; I need to check it over time for accuracy. However, it's running very well so far and the price is right. I'll be buying more remote sensors [...] I found the remote sensor part no. is TS33C, can find them on Amazon with that search).
The majority of complaints say the humidity is "off." However, I didn't see a single valid calibration conducted.
Update 01-March-2009
I just took the main unit, the sensor and sling psychrometer. The conditions in my home at time of testing were 68F and 30% relative humidity.
Main unit read 68.4F/30% RH
The Sensor: 68.0F/30% RH
Sling Psychrometer: 68F/31% RH
The sling psychrometer consists of two sealed thermometers and will never need a calibration, it is an accurate standard. This Honeywell Unit is pretty darn good.
Update 13-Dec-2009
Someone contacted me and corrected a big point. I did not calibrate the unit by adjusting it to a known standard, I simply compared the values. My apologies for this rather serious error.

LCD Display Temperature and Humidity Meter with Alarm Clock Hygrometer Review

LCD Display Temperature and Humidity Meter with Alarm Clock Hygrometer
Average Reviews:

Bought three of them, all three of them had different humidities, all in the same room set side by side. So I don't know how accurate they were. It appears to me they weren't. The temperature was all the same, so I would say the temperature was right on. But I wouldn't trust humidity part of it. I do like the display, it's easy to read. Don't know if I'd recommend this because of the difference in humidity. Oh, and the humidity was anywhere between seven and 10 percent of a difference.
