L3845G Features: -Galileo thermometer. -This thermometer features seven floating multi-colored temperature gradients of 2 degree farenheit from 68 degree farenheit to 80 degree farenheit and is accurate to within 2.5 degree. -Each Thermometer is encased in brilliant glass with many multi-color floating balls. -A gold tag that displays a temperature in Fahrenheit hangs beneath each ball. -Each of the liquid-filled floats weighs exactly .006 grams more than the one above it. -Precise measurements of the liquid filled balls ensure a stately and orderly procession of ups and downs as the temperature changes. -To tell the temperature, you read the tag on the lowest of the floating balls. -As the temperature of the fluid in the cylinder increases, the pressure drops and the liquid becomes less dense. -When the precisely measured floats reach their specific calibrated temperature they drop. -As the temperature of the liquid cools, the process is reversed and the floats rise from the bottom of the cylinder. (More customer reviews)Accurate Galileo thermometer in 2 degree Fahrenheit increments. But this is more useful as a conversation piece and as a teaching aid in explaining density (specific gravity) variations with temperature rather than as a thermometer. The actual thermometer looks much better than the on-line picture. I think that this product is nicer than the smaller versions that are for sale by River City and other manufacturers, and worth the extra price.
This product is fragile, and the first delivery of this product, although properly boxed and protected, did not survive UPS shipping. I had to send the broken glass leaking pieces back. Although Amazon made the return process as painless as possible, it was still inconvenient and messy. Amazon's service in getting a replacement to me was excellent.
