HoMedics SS-4000 Sound Spa Classic Deluxe Clock Radio & Sound Machine with Time Projection Review

HoMedics SS-4000 Sound Spa Classic Deluxe Clock Radio and Sound Machine with Time Projection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The HoMedics SS-4000 Sound Spa Classic Deluxe Clock Radio and Sound Machine is a handy little device to have around. It features a pretty good radio and six natural sound settings. The nature settings are Ocean, Summer Night, Rain, Rainforest, Thunder, and Waterfall. Of these settings, Ocean and Rainforest are my personal favorites. Rain and Waterfall are pretty good as well. Since I live in Louisiana, I only have to open my window at night to hear the real Summer Night setting. Thunder falls short due to the fact that it really doesn't sound much like thunder. It's more like a constant roar.
The clock is very easy to set up and use. Like another reviewer, I found no need to use the instructions to set up the time, alarm, projection focus and placement or any of the sound settings. I did double check myself by reading the instructions after I set up the clock, but I had everything covered.

The time projector is great for folks like myself who don't even want to turn over in the morning. When the alarm goes off, all you need to do in order to see the time is swing your left or right arm (depending on the location of your clock in relation to the bed) to the snooze button, press it and look up. The projector will display the time for five seconds on the ceiling. That's long enough for you to decide whether or not to get up. You also have the option of keeping the projector on at all times. It gives off a nice warm blue glow in a darkened room.
A sleep timer is also provided on the clock. If you need some soothing sounds to block out reality in order to get to sleep, this feature is really nice.
The only shortcomings I find with this clock radio are that the radio reception is iffy at times (but then again, most clock radios are) and the alarm isn't very loud even though I have the volume cranked up. I need a very loud alarm to wake me in the morning. The buzzer on this clock just doesn't wake me very well. You can also choose the radio or nature sounds to wake up to, but I need an annoying and loud sound to get me going.
Overall, this is an excellent purchase for folks who need white noise in the background in order to get to sleep, do a little work, or just to relax. It's also pretty handy in getting and keeping the kids asleep at night. If you need a loud buzzer to wake to in the morning like I do, you might want a different clock. However, I think the positives outweigh the negatives with this clock radio. I like it and recommend it.

Noise Machine Sound Machine Therapy with Alarm Clock Soothing Sounds Review

Noise Machine Sound Machine Therapy with Alarm Clock Soothing Sounds

In a search for a white noise machine/sleep aid that would drown out my tinnitus (constant ringing in my ears), I found that these products can get expensive. So I opted for this very cheap model, and am disappointed, not so much because it has poor sound quality, but because the clock and alarm functions don't work. I was hoping to at least use it for a traveling clock. It will be returned, and I will search for a better quality product, even if it is more expensive.

Travel Tranquil Moments Alarm Clock Sound Therapy Machine Review

Travel Tranquil Moments Alarm Clock Sound Therapy Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When it works, this noise machine/clock is pretty nice. It keeps time and has a few nice sounds to choose from. It's a little pricey at $100, but if it would continue to work, I'd be fine with it.
The problem is that we've had three of these, and every one has died after a few weeks of use!
We bought the first one at a Brookstone in Vegas. It worked for that trip, but only lasted a few days into our next trip. The display went completely out, and it wouldn't respond at all - fresh batteries didn't do anything, plugging it in didn't do anything. I returned it and got a second from the Philadelphia airport - this one lasted a few weeks and died again! We returned that one at the King of Prussia Mall (Pennsylvania), and the same exact thing happened with the replacement they gave us after a few weeks!
I'm baffled that we've gone through 3 of these things, all gotten from completely different locations, and all have died after a few short weeks of use. This really is the worst quality item I've ever had. I would think that every one of these ever purchased would be returned, based on my experience with the three that I've had. I suppose it's possible that we just received 3 bad ones, and the majority are fine, but it seems extremely unlikely. There's no other constant with it - we've used different batteries, and have used them in different locations. We've kept them in their box, and haven't been rough on them at all. It's an alarm clock with noise - it's not like it's that complex of a piece of equipment. I truly am baffled at this piece of junk.
My advice is don't even consider buying one of these. I'm sure there's plenty of other choices out there at this price point that will do the same thing but will last longer than a month.

Timex T309T Alarm Clock Radio with Nature Sounds (Titanium) Review

Timex T309T Alarm Clock Radio with Nature Sounds (Titanium)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a nice little item. It has good sound quality and three types of alarm: radio, buzzer, and nature sounds (there are 3 or 4 of these to choose from). You can specify whether an alarm setting works every day, only on weekdays, or only on weekends. Each alarm setting has its own radio station or nature sound (and volume) associated with it. It's got a nice big snooze button on top, which doubles as a display dimmer (my favorite feature).
I've come across just a couple disappointments in the week that I've had it.
- I thought I'd be able to create a radio-alarm setting for weekdays and another radio-alarm setting (same time, but different station) for weekends. Can't do it. You get one setting for each type of alarm.
- The radio preset buttons are arranged in a line across the front of the unit. The band setting button is in that line too, to its left. So if you want preset #1, you've got to punch the second button. Hitting the first button switches you to AM.
All in all, though, it's worth the [money].

The Timex T309TT triple-alarm clock radio lets you wake to your choice of AM/FM radio, buzzer, or any of four nature sounds (wind, brook, surf, and forest spring). Yes, you read correctly: the triple-alarm system lets you set three independent alarm times and wake sounds.Even if you're waking alone, you might want to set the device to trigger, say, soothing nature sounds at 7 a.m., a gentle radio station at 7:15, and a blaring buzzer at 7:30 just in case your heinie is still in the sack when it ought to be in the shower. Use the convenient 7-5-2 system to set your alarm(s) for the week, weekdays, or the weekend.Store up to 18 radio stations in memory, accessible through six one-touch tuning buttons. The radio offers drift-free PLL (phase-locked loop) digital tuning and displays station frequency and preset numbers.Time to crash? Drift into sleep to the radio or soothing nature sounds using the programmable sleep timer. The unit also offers a 99-year calendar (2000 to 2099) with year/month/day display and a sure-alarm battery backup system.

Homedics SS-6510 SoundSpa Fusion AM/FM Alarm Clock Radio with iPOD Docking Station, 6 Natural Sounds and LCD Display Review

Homedics SS-6510 SoundSpa Fusion AM/FM Alarm Clock Radio with iPOD Docking Station, 6 Natural Sounds and LCD Display
Average Reviews:

I needed a replacement for my iHome iPod alarm clock which gave up the ghost after two years and stopped recognizing my iPod. Rather than drop $100 for 2 years again, I decided to try this partly because it was small and because it seemed simple, both of which ended up being true. Overall, it does everything it's supposed to and has two big benefits - 2 alarms that can be set separately or simultaneously and those soothing new age-y sounds. The negatives - it takes a few tries to figure out the best way to set the alarm (especially if you're a snooze button addict like me) and the display light is annoying as it only comes in off, super bright and oh my God I'm blind! This is a big difference from the iHome clock which had a very light display light that was perfect for falling asleep. Otherwise, it's a better, more compact product for a great price.

Homedics SS-4500 SoundSpa Classic Clock Radio, Silver Review

Homedics SS-4500 SoundSpa Classic Clock Radio, Silver
Average Reviews:

Usually when one needs a white noise machine they're sensitive to light too... the projection on this clock is like the landing lights on a 747 - and there's no way to dim it. Same thing with the clock face - it's so bright it's unusable.
As for the white noise aspect, the loops are so short you can hear a repetition of sounds - enough to give you a headache. It's more like a torture device than a sleep aid.
Avoid this product.

Conair SU7 Sound Therapy and Relaxation Clock Radio Review

Conair SU7 Sound Therapy and Relaxation Clock Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Conair's Sound Therapy & Relaxation Clock Radio, model SU7, which bills itself as "Soothing to babies," is misleadingly packaged for infants yet is identical in sound-selection makeup to its more expensive cousin marketed to adults: the Obus Forme Sound Therapy Relaxation System (which retails nearly double sans the grownup features). In what would appear to be a marketing mix-up, the infant version of this Conair-branded device offers a dual alarm, AM/FM tuner and a LCD readout, whereas the model marketed to adults has no clock, no radio tuner and no alarm. Go figure.
The good: ten sound choices, including rainfall, running stream, waterfall, songbirds, heartbeat, white noise, ocean waves, summer night, thunderstorm and tropical rainforest. What sets this apart from other clock radios that use batteries to back up the clock and alarm settings is that it is entirely functional on four AA batteries alone (although the AC power adapter is included).
Another strong point: This unit has good AM/FM reception -- better than a number of HoMedics, which I also tried.
Better yet, the unit was easy enough to operate that I didn't have to pull out the manual to figure it out. It should be noted, however, that the implementation of the alarm is somewhat different then other alarm clock radios. Snooze provides a 10-minute extension, but you cannot hit it more than three times without deactivating the alarm. To turn an alarm off, simply hit the alarm button OR your choice of the Radio or Sound Therapy button, which are placed to the right and left of the large round snooze button. (Fortunately the remainder of the buttons on the surface will not result in accidentally disabling the alarm.) Rounding out the feature set is the sleep function, ranging from 15-90 minutes. Last but not least, you may opt to wake to radio, nature sound or buzzer. There is a headphone jack, but no line-in by which to connect an MP3 or CD player.
The only significant downside unique to the Conair SU7 is the blue backlight. At certain angles/distances it is difficult to see the black LCD digits on the clock. I don't know who in the "high fashion" world of consumer product development decided it was cool to have nearly all today's digital clocks backlit by a blue or amber light instead of providing the high-contrast green-, blue- or red-on-black numeral readouts, but those product developers should be forced to squint through the nightlight-like light emitted from their products to try to read their poorly conceived black LCD digits across a darkened room -- no easy task even for someone with 20/20 vision!
As for sound quality, I would put this somewhat above the HoMedics natural sounds line -- although you shouldn't expect it to rival CD-quality audio. The sound samplings are more distinct than HoMedics and more varied than those offered by Timex nature sound machines, but they are also higher pitched. By contrast, the HoMedics models provide nondescript, relatively low-pitched sounds, which are more akin to white noise. Consequently, it should be noted that less distinct nature sounds are probably easier to sleep to if only because the loop is less obvious when the sound stage is somewhat muted and flat (or the speaker is poor, whichever is the case). On the flip side, the HoMedics nature sound generators are not quite as pleasant on the ear during the day. To create a daytime oasis, Conair receives my vote because the sound samples are somewhat more realistic (not to mention the fact that Conair offers the most natural sound selections in the sub $60 price range). Insomniacs, nevertheless, should consider the tried-and-true option of running an air purifier, which is a good year-around white noise generator (one that won't chill you like a fan or a running air conditioner in the winter, toast you like a forced-air heater in the summer, wear out your television set prematurely, or drive your electricity up like a running clothes dryer). Similarly, audiophiles should look to a CD for authentic, non-looping, stereo-quality nature sounds. (Consider "Echos of Nature", a five-CD set, also sold on Amazon. The great thing about this boxed set is the fact that there are no New Age soundtracks mixed in to detract from the outdoor/wilderness ambiance.)
Poorly legible LCD clock aside, the price of the Conair SU7 relative to the number of sound choices and the portability offered by the battery or AC operation really can't be beat. Don't allow the mother-and-child packaging or Amazon's product description fool you: There's nothing inherently "infant" about this unit's design. Because this product has the appearance of being a "baby item" that is not positioned in the baby section of most retail stores such as Target, it is seemingly a slow seller, which may explain why I found mine on clearance for half the $20 list price. If you have been considering the newly released $40 Obus Forme Sound Therapy Relaxation System, take advantage of Conair's marketing mistake and pick up the SU7 instead. At $20 it is a deal, but at $10 it is a steal!

The Sharper Image EC-B100 Sound Soother Alarm Clock Review

The Sharper Image EC-B100 Sound Soother Alarm Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Sharper Image Sound Soother has a very sleek and modern design, however, there are a few flaws that detract from the overall experience.
First, the digital display is very bright in a dark bedroom. Unlike a regular, cheap alarm clock where only the time is lit, the entire display of the Sound Soother is backlit. If your bedroom has little ambient light at night, this display will emit a glow that some people may find too bright. Although there are three display brightness settings, there is little difference between them and the lowest setting is still bright. We have to turn the clock away from the bed at night so it's not directly in our face, but the glow is still significant.
Second, the sound quality could be better. This could be a tradeoff for the sleek design, but the sounds are not very natural coming out of the small rear speakers and are a bit tinny as another reviewer has noted. The volume control is not very good either, as the difference between the first, second, third, etc. volume selections are very noticeable. In other words, 1 is too soft for some sounds, but 2 is way too loud. The audio loop on some of the sounds is too short as well, and if you are concentrating on the sound you may be able to detect the pattern, which can be distracting as you are trying to fall asleep. Also, the control buttons themselves make a very loud and abrasive "click" sound when you push them, which seems odd for a machine designed to relax you.
Overall, the Sound Soother is a decent alarm clock that gets the job done, but it could definitely be improved (display too bright, audio quality is lacking, and buttons take away from the overall experience). Although it is made by Sharper Image, it has a somewhat "cheap" feeling to it. Despite the flaws, it is one of the better sound machine/alarm clock I came across that was less than $50.
