Sony ICF-CD855VSIL TV/Weather/FM/AM 4 Band CD Clock Radio Review

Sony ICF-CD855VSIL TV/Weather/FM/AM 4 Band CD Clock Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this for its sleek design, small footprint and CD capability. It was purchased for our babies room so that we could play CDs. We wanted something smaller and better looking than any of the boom boxes and not as expensive as the shelf systems at which we looked.
So your needs may differ if you plan to use this as an alarm clock.
We really like the size and sound quality for something this small. It is very easy to set up without even using the owners manual. The buttons are well placed and have a very solid feel. The unit has a very high quality feel to it as you would expect from Sony and considering the price.
All functions work as described so I won't spend a lot of time on them individually. Reception is excellent in FM mode, AM is a bit weaker. The TV and weather bands are very hit and miss as far as reception and was dissapointed that I could not get better reception from the preselectd weather frequencies as I live in a well populated area that is subject to severe weather.
CD works flawlessly but the size hinders the bass and mid-range a bit. But again, consideing the size of the unit I am more than happy with the sound quality. If sound quality is more important than size you may want to consider the Panasonic RC-CD350.
I have only four complaints about this unit... the wall wart power supply is huge, the LCD backlight is VERY bright, even on its lowest setting of three. This isn't too much of an issue for us as we will use it as a night light in our babies room. More frustrating is the fact that considering how bright the LCD backlight is it is difficult to read the LCD diplay. I couldn't use this if it were for my bedroom alarm clock. And the last is the lack of a battery back up. This is sort of silly in a unit that costs $80.
Bottom line is this is a high quality unit which has a few drawbacks that a unit of this price point shouldn't have.
Pros:
Sleek design (Only Panasonic was close on design)
Relativly small size (considering it plays CDs)
Good sound quality (Panasonic was better but bigger)
Solid feel (What you expect from Sony at this price)
Cons:
Huge wall wart transformer
VERY bright LCD backlight
Poor weather band reception
Difficult to read LCD
No battery back up

I have this exact cd alarm clock for my son, he loves it & listens to his oceans sounds at night. So when I was in the market for another, there was no question that this is what I wanted. I purchased it, the one I receive was broken so I exchanged it. I received a new one promptly. This lasted about 2 months then the CD player broke. I'm very disappointed since he quality is great. My originaly is over 3 years old & works like a charm playing lullabys every night. I guess it was a bad egg?

Sony ICF-CD831 CD Clock Radio with FM/AM Radio and Extendable Snooze (White) Review

Sony ICF-CD831 CD Clock Radio with FM/AM Radio and Extendable Snooze (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the best alarm clock I've ever had, except for one thing. No battery backup. I suppose I could plug it into one of my UPSs to alleviate that problem, but I was surprised at how quickly it lost its memory after power loss. It would also be nice if it had a digital tuner, but that isn't a big deal to me since I don't use it for readio much. If I did use it for radio a lot, it would drive me nuts manually tuning to stations.
I love the snooze feature where you can keep tapping it to change when the next alarm will be. The ideal alarm clock would be similar to this one, with a battery backup, and a digital tuner. Oh yeah, it sounds pretty good too. I have it set play a nature sounds CD when I wake up. When it plays the morning birds I sometimes confuse the recording for the real birds outside my window, and vice versa. I'm not saying these are excellent speakers, but they definitely sound good for an alarm clock. Oh, and it looks pretty stylish to most of the other boxy CD alarm clocks out there.
In short, a very good alarm clock, but plug it into a UPS if you want to be sure you won't be late for work because of a power outtage in the middle of the night.

GPX Dual AM/FM/CD Alarm Clock Radio (D714) Review

GPX Dual AM/FM/CD Alarm Clock Radio (D714)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this item as a present. It's alarm clock features work fine, allowing for two alarms, and has a battery backup (don't know how long it lasts, though - the manual doesn't say). I particularly like the red display - it doesn't hurt night-vision or light up the room, like green/blue displays do (something I find very frustrating). The buttons are in fairly good positions, with the Snooze button a different texture from the rest, an important thing for half-asleep morning fingers. The time button is set on the opposite side from the hour/minute buttons, so there's little chance of accidentally resetting the time (something I've done many times with other clocks).
However, the Snooze timer is hardwired for 6 minutes, which is way too short. The sound quality is terrible, *very* tinny, and there're no jacks for connecting it to other, better speakers (I don't know if any other clocks come with such functionality, but it would be awesome if they did).
But the worst part for me is the way the alarm works in relation to the CD player. This appears to be a failing in every CD-alarm model I've read about so far, so it's unfortunately not unique to this one: The alarm only ever plays the *first* track of the CD. Using program mode means nothing when it comes to the alarm - all it allows you to do is change which track it considers the first one. So for someone who hits snooze at least three times (my boyfriend hits his at least seven or eight), having the exact same track play, from exactly the same point, each time the alarm goes off gets VERY annoying. I desperately tried to get the program mode to save the "random" setting for when the alarm went off, but no luck - it doesn't do that. Also, if you hit snooze, when the alarm next goes off it does not resume at the point in the song where you left off, it simply starts the song over again. How many times can you listen to the same opening notes of a song before going insane?
Manufacturers of such alarms have completely missed the point of having a CD-alarm: It's not to play the CD all the way through like a regular stereo, it's to have the choice of various sounds/music to *wake up to* in the morning! If that choice is taken away, it completely nullifies the benefits of a CD-alarm.
In terms of a general alarm clock, it works fine. The speakers are horrible, but that's okay - they're just there to wake me up. If only the CD-alarm allowed for random tracks and it had good Snooze functionality, I'd actually be satisified because it would do it's job - especially since I can't take waking up to the innane morning radio chatter much longer!

Ford Thunderbird Retro Neon Alarm Clock Radio with CD Player - Blue Review

Ford Thunderbird Retro Neon Alarm Clock Radio with CD Player - Blue

We got this for my son for his birthday as a combined CD-player, alarm clock, analog-clock so he can learn time, pseudo-nightlight. The functions work well and it looks great, particularly the neon ring around the edge (which was actually so bright we couldn't use it as a night light).
The negatives: the plastic parts are a little on the cheap side, and in particular we have had problem with the mode selector switching all by itself between "off" "radio" and "CD". We fiddled with it to make it stick a little better, but it still has to be adjusted every time the radio gets jostled.

This clock came out in Korea a little over a week ago. I bought it at my favorite Korean store to use in my bedroom. It(sony) is a great American brand I always try to find American things to put in my house. I got this one because i like Sony a lot. I have had a Sony clock beofer this and it lasted for many years. I just got it yesterday and i used it last night. Even though the shape seems a little wierd with the time being to the back of the clock it did not make a very big difference. I think I actually like it better the time being not right in your face, like most other clocks have their screen at the front of their machine. This is a wounderful clock my by one of the best American companies in the WHOLE WORLD.

Sony ICF-C143 Dream Machine Large-Display AM/FM Clock Radio with Digital Tuner Review

What I was looking for was a clock radio that had a digital tuner and a simple alarm on/off system (I seem to have a problem with pushing switches too far and not waking up.)When I got the sony home and played with it's features I was floored, this is one of the best designed clocks I've ever seen. They put a lot of thought into this one, for example, you can set which preset radio station to wake up to. So if you want to use the sleep feature and go to bed listening to Beethoven's 5th on NPR but would rather wake up to some AC/DC you can do it!Also, the nap feature allows you to quickly set the alarm to go off in 15,30,40,etc minutes so that you don't have to reset your alarm time. And if you hit the snooze button it adds time, so instead of 10 minutes more sleep you get 20, or more! However, I'm an insomniac, and find that I can only sleep well when the room is dark. If you are like me and can't handle any light in your room, then this is not the clock for you. SERIOUSLY. On the highest brightness level you can make shadow puppets on the wall. And on the lowest you can use the clock as a reading light (if you hold it close enough to your book). So, even though this would have been the perfect clock for me I had to return it. Hopefully one day clock manufacturers will realize that a simple on off switch for the back lighting is all that's needed to let millions of people enjoy their products.

GPX CRCD-2806 Clock Radio and CD Player with AM/FM Radio and Alarm Review

GPX CRCD-2806 Clock Radio and CD Player with AM/FM Radio and Alarm
Average Reviews:

(I'm not a kid! Don't tell anyone)
There were absolutely no reviews anywhere when I bought this item, so it was a bit of a gamble, though for $[...] you can't go wrong. I'm still amazed by that price. I've only had it for a day so I'll write this review under the assumption that the device doesn't break down tomorrow.
The radio is circular in shape and a bit bulky. If you tuck it in under a shelf it looks great, otherwise it looks a bit old fashioned. It's basically a small stereo.
This will play burned CD's. The audio is nice and clear, though slightly muted. But I doubt you'll be critical about that in your groggy early morning state. If you turn the volume up, it's perfect. There is only a very faint whir of the CD player, it's not distracting and you can't hear it at all over the music.
This device allows you to wake up to a buzzer, the radio (which is clear), or a CD. It's very simple to set. You cannot choose which track on the CD plays, unfortunately. It automatically plays track 1. There is a "Random" button and a "skip" button if you decide you want to lay back down and wake up to a different song. There is also no headphone jack. Those are probably the only two features that this device lacks. I can live without them. This is only for waking up to CD's and listening to the radio. If I want to listen to music during the day, I have my laptop.
Assuming that it doesn't break down over time, this is a great product.

Read the other reviews on the other clocks... lot's of complaints.
I have had this for a week and it works great and the controls are simple.
One great feature is the alarm reset. You just hit the button to turn off the alarm without having to reset it again for the next night. It also has a snooze.
Waking up to CD is great (it does play CD-Rs). A minor complain, but it always starts on the first song regardless where you left it the night before.

Wake up to the tunes you like rather than the choices of your local DJ with this Magnavox clock radio, which comes equipped with a CD player and an analog AM/FM tuner. The dual alarm features three different settings--for rising to a CD, a favorite radio station, or the buzzer--and is ideal for households with two people who wake at different times. It also includes a sleep timer and repeat alarm, along with a battery backup that activates during a power outage. Groggy users will appreciate the large, easy-to-read LED display, which displays the time clearly so you won't misinterpret the hour. In addition, the CD player also works intuitively, with the standard skip, repeat, and pause functions people have come to expect. The clock radio carries a 90-day warranty against defects.

For being such a small device, it really does give nice sound. In fact, I popped in some obscure CD that had a recording of birds twirping to test it out, and my cat came running in the room. It's lightweight and compact, so if fits nicely on the stand. The numbers are much easier to read than you would think, judging from the picture here. The screen gives you all sorts of information as to what you have programmed, so when you wake up at 3:00 in the morning, wondering if you have programmed your alarm so you don't miss your flight, it's very easy to see whether or not your alarm is on and how you will wake up. The tuner picked up a station 60 miles away, too. The only thing I wish it had is a graduwake feature. But that's about it. It's easy to use. I had it all set up in less than four minutes. The doze alarm lasts for six minutes, and it's easy to find due to the good design. No worries about hitting the wrong button and shutting off your alarm.

Sony Dream MachineTM AM/FM CD Clock Radio in Black Review

Sony Dream MachineTM AM/FM CD Clock Radio in Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the price this should be better than it is. Over all the design is pretty good and I like the soft blue LCD screen. I've got it set on the lowest setting and it is about right for my dark room. I turn it up when I need a night light and not wake up my wife in the middle of the night by hitting the snooze bar a few times. The radio reception is acceptable but does have trouble getting stations that are far away and there is noticeable station bleed from other nearby frequencies unless the station signal is strong.
It is a clock radio so I wasn't expecting stellar sound quality but it could be better here as well. The sound quality is about what I used to get on an old transistor radio I used to have as a kid. But it is in stereo! :-) Sony....there are more frequencies than just between 2k and 10k. Put a little bass in the mix with larger drivers or a better sealed resonance chamber.
One feature that took getting used to is that if you don't go through the alarm settings correctly it doesn't accept it. Meaning you may think you set the alarm but when finished the alarm doesn't display. That is your clue that you didn't do it right. Now that I know how it's done it's no big deal but be careful the first time you use it and be sure to read the directions.
The one thing I was really disappointed in is that it doesn't play MP3 CD's. I didn't read the literature that closely and when I saw that it was MP3 compatible I thought it meant more than just the axillary input. My bad on that part, but for the price I assumed it was.
Over all it is a decent clock radio but fell short with sound quality. You could do worse though as most others I tried (Sharp, Emerson, Phillips, Timex, Memorex) didn't sound any better. I'll be keeping it since I don't have the cash to get a Bose or Sangean.

Very nice clock. Although sound is a little thin (but what do you expect from a clock radio), it's very clean and detailed. CD transport works very well, plays all my CD-Rs and RWs without a hitch. Pros: Big display (easy to read), digital tuner, nice button layout, very easy to set the alarms, brightness control (although manual.) Cons: cannot set alarms separately for weekdays/weekends, no gentle wake, very brights not-dimmable LEDs that shine brigther that the LCD screen itself, need a longer FM antenna for better reception.
I'm returning it to get the next model in line (ICF-CD863V), which has automatic dimmer control, gentle wake, and slightly better sound.

I was really disappointed after i got this alarm clock. It worked fine for a few days, although the sound qaulity was rather disappointing. Then everything just fell apart...the cd player stopped working first, playing tracks only when it felt like it. The alarm would go off sporadically and was very unreliable; it seemed like whenever i needed to wake up the most it never rang. I've since returned the item. An alarm clock that picks and chooses when to wake me up isn't my idea of a great product.

I love how this clock looks, I love that if I tap the top, I get a glowy blue nightlight, I love the nap button, programmable from 20 minutes to 2 hours, I love the ease of use with the buttons placement, it even has good reception for the radio.
I hate that I bought it at the beginning of April 06 and by August half the lines that made up the numbers on the face no longer worked. It is impossible to read the clock anymore. I hate that when I went to the point of sale, they no longer carry it, and when I went to RCA, they no longer even show it on their site.
