La Crosse Wireless Weather Station WS-2310-15 Review

La Crosse Wireless Weather Station WS-2310-15
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to replace our old worn out wind speed sensor. We have had our weather machine for about 4 years now and the wind sensor started not recording. Since you can't get inside that easily to fix them we bought this replacement and figure it should last us another 4 years. Not too bad for a $45 investment. I searched all over the net to find one and thanks to Amazon I was able to find what I was looking for. Lacrosse and Ambient didn't show them on either of their websites. Thanks again Amazon for making my shopping easy and a pleasure.

La Crosse Technology WT-967S Metal Strap Atomic Watch Review

La Crosse Technology WT-967S Metal Strap Atomic Watch

This is a great watch.
It looks stylish and syncs automatically with the atomic reference in Colorado. Please note that because it syncs automatically, there is only one button!! You will not be able to easily set it manually, but you don't need to. Using the one button, you just need to select the time zone you are in,
and once the watch syncs, you are set.
The display is clear from all angles and all light conditions including semi-bright sunlight, which is much better than many other LCD watches.
Band is adjustable, great watch.

I wanted something different for my office and this weather girl weather station was the perfect fit. She doesn't smile but keeps me on time and I always know the temperature and humidity at a glance.
I am planning on buying another one for my brother's birthday as he's heard me talk about her and would appreciate as I have.

La Crosse Technology WS-9004U Wireless Rain Center with Self-Emptying Rain Bucket Review

La Crosse Technology WS-9004U Wireless Rain Center with Self-Emptying Rain Bucket
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This device has some very serious disadvantages.
1. The instructions are very poor.
2. The outdoor gauge and the indoor indicator must be fairly close together. In my case I had to put them about 20 feet apart with direct line-of-sight going through a thermo-paned window.
3. In order to get the indoor and outdoor units to communicate, you have to have the two units within about 5 feet of each other while you install the batteries in the indoor unit.
4. The ability to reset readings to zero are "clunky." In order to reset the 24-hour reading, you must remove the batteries for two minutes. Then you have to go through the process of getting the outdoor and indoor units communicating again. (See No. 3, above) Additionally, resetting the 24-hour reading also resets the total accumulated reading to zero.
5. While the description says batteries last 36 months, I have had to replace mine every three months. Replacing the batteries in the outside unit is not easy, and the clips on the battery case broke on the third time I replaced them. It took some drilling and screwing to jury rig a repair. Moreover, replacing the batteries requires going through the process of establishing communication between the two units again (see No. 3 above).
6. The limit for the 24-hour reading is 10 inches. This may not be a problem in most places; however, in Florida it is a problem. When the 24-hour reading goes over 10, the indicator shows "OFL", which apparently means "overflow." In order to get it working again, you must remove the batteries in the indoor unit - which resets everything and requires re-establishing communication again (see No. 3 above).
I'd suggest trying a different brand.

Keep an eye on rain conditions with this wireless rain center. From La Crosse Technology, the rain center comprises of a self-emptying TX24U-IT rain bucket sensor and an indoor LCD receiver for wall-mounting or tabletop display. The sensor measures the total rainfall with a range of 0 to 199.99 inches, rainfall for the past 24 hours, and the heaviness of current rainfall. To prevent water from overflowing, the rain bucket self-empties with its internal system of tilting cups. From up to 330 feet, the sensor transmits data every six seconds at a 915 MHz frequency to the receiver. The receiver relays the total and 24-hour rainfall in inches to a hundredth of an inch, and features graphic indicators for current rain conditions. If more than ten counts (0.2-inch readings) of rainfall have been reported in the past 10 minutes, the heavy rainfall indicator appears; this graphic indicator’s animated rain distinguishes it from the light rainfall indicator. The rain gauge also offers a rainfall alarm over a 24-hour period that beeps when a user-determined amount, from .05 to 4 inches of rain, has been reached. With the two-button interface, the user sets the alarm and resets the total rainfall. Unless the user resets the system, the receiver doesn’t reset the 24-hour rainfall to 0.00, instead updating the value hourly. The 24-hour rainfall reads 0.00 when no rain has fallen for 24 hours. For the most accurate measurements, mount the rain bucket sensor in a secure, flat location without overhead obstructions. The rain center requires the separate purchase of 4 AAA alkaline batteries. A limited one-year manufacturer’s warranty covers this item. The receiver measures 2-1/2 inches wide by 1 inch deep by 3-5/6 inches high, while the rain bucket measures 5-2/3 inches wide by 2-1/5 inches deep by 3-1/2 inches high.

La Crosse Technology Weather Channel WS-1611TWC-IT Professional Weather Center Review

La Crosse Technology Weather Channel WS-1611TWC-IT Professional Weather Center
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
Price less than $100.
Fewer batteries, 5 - AA's
Battery only, no wall wart required
Long Battery Life, ~2 Years
Detailed, illustrated manual
Altitude adjustment for the barometer
Impressive wireless range
* Rain gauge more useful than expected
Cons:
Mixed reviews
No radio receiver for WWV's Atomic Clock
Temp sensor not weather proof
No inside temp reading
No PC Connection
*Painful Max/Min reset procedure
Looking at the product picture, one sees The Weather Channel logo, yet if you go to their store, nothing approaching this product exists. My conclusion is that after six-months at the TWC, they wanted no part of the headaches and shipped their inventory back to Lacrosse for sale on Amazon. So this price disappears with that inventory.
* I no longer believe the above, I've seen this exact model for sale at Wal-Mart.
In researching the triple sensor (temp, wind, rain) market I was primarily interested in temp and wind. Since its always windy in the winter, now I'll know how windy. It rains so seldom that why bother measuring, besides it won't measure snow, and humidity is always so low it's at the fringe of dry sensor measurement. I'm not a weather hobbiest, so PC connection was unimportant, besides being impractical in my solar-electric home. I'll just do the same as the last 10-years, write down the daily min and max in the monthly wall calendar, how crude, pen and paper.
I considered Oregon Scientific, better reviews, more features, but much more expensive and it needed 10 batteries and a wall wart. Also Zephyr and Davis, the first had no reviews or downloadable manual and the latter was out of my price range. I read many positive and negative reviews for the 1611/1612 and I downloaded several manuals. In the end, I decided on the "devil I knew", my $20 La Cross wireless thermometer, 9013, had been reliable for many years. I'll keep it around for its atomic clock.
Like all La Crosse weather instruments, the top line of the display is the time and date, on a weather station? Then the date field is so tight, mine now reads 11209, unlike the time field there are no spaces or delimiters. The single most important reading, the outdoor temp, is buried in the fourth group, duh. Since you can get an atomic clock on $15 units, one has to wonder why its not included on the 1611? Having all that in mind, I was price driven, so the 1611 is it.
A clever feature of the 1611 is one pair of AA's inside the temp sensor powers it and both the rain and wind sensors, all wired together. Now it gets strange, if all these sensors are outside and wirelessly connected to the base station, why is the temp sensor not weather proof? It has to be protected from rain and sun, Duh? So I made a "bird house" to protect the "outdoor" sensor from the weather.
I have the sensors roughly 200-feet from the base, the signal has to pass through a 12" solid wood wall and the base is sitting on a table with a wireless b/g router and a wireless mouse, no problems. I'm impressed.
I've attached two photos, may help to visualize setup. *Added three more pics.
Edit (*)July 10, 2009
After the wind blew over my original mast and smashed the wind sensor into too many pieces to count, I bought a second used unit. I guyed the mast with four steel cables, see pic. I now have two working base stations and a few spare parts.
I have two more complaints about the user interface:
1) Resetting the max/min readings. Press Max/Min to scroll through all the possible values > press Set, then press + for every value you wish to reset. Theirs no master reset.
2) The Beaufort wind speed scale is meaningless unless you live on the ocean and own a boat. I'd much prefer the MPH value be inside the wind rose.

Keep abreast of weather shifts just outside the front door with this professional weather center from The Weather Channel by La Crosse Technology. Complete with wind and rain measurements, the weather center allows users to assess up-to-date outdoor conditions to plan appropriately. The weather center also records up to 200 sets of weather data, minimum and maximum temperatures and humidity, and barometric pressure over a 12-hour period.
The sleek weather center base mounts on a wall or stands alone. On its LCD screen, equipped with eight levels of contrast and a push-button LED backlight for nighttime illumination, the base displays the weather and time information. Users manually set the date and time, and can also engage the buzz alarm for morning wake-up. To assess outdoor conditions, a thermo-hygro sensor communicates with the base at a 915 MHz frequency from up to 330 feet. This sensor measures temperatures from –39.8 to +139 degrees F, and humidity levels from 1 to 99 percent. Based on the sensor’s barometric pressure readings, the base unit presents a 12-hour historical bar graph and an air pressure tendency arrow. A graphic icon depicts the forecast. In the event of storms, the weather center features a storm warning alert, and the user can create additional custom alarms. Connected by cables to the thermo-hygro sensor, a rain sensor records rainfall measurements and a wind sensor analyzes wind chill, speed, and direction. A mounting case comes with the thermo-hygro sensor. To ensure proper function, install the thermo-hygro sensor in a protected location out of direct sun or rain. The weather center requires the separate purchase of five AA batteries. Covered by a limited one-year warranty, the weather center base measures 4-3/4 inches wide by 1-1/5 inches deep by 6-9/10 inches tall.

La Crosse Technology WS-9520U Wireless Projection Forecast Station with Oscar Outlook Review

La Crosse Technology WS-9520U Wireless Projection Forecast Station with Oscar Outlook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the LaCrosse WS-9520U last week. As usual, the transaction and shipping with Amazon was excellent. I very rarely return online purchases, but this one is going back. In general, the unit is as advertised - and others may find it completely satisfactory - but, after two nights of use, I have found the following specific things to be unacceptable:
1. The backlight cannot be set to remain on continuously - it only lights when a button is pushed - regardless of whether you're powering with AC or batteries. I think alarm clocks are always more convenient when you can see them at, well, uh, night. Yes, the on-ceiling projection shows the time, but nothing else. This is less than convenient.
2. General build quality is iffy at best - the buttons are clunky, loud and awkwardly placed. The entire unit seems flimsy - like it's just barely holding itself together. It's extremely light and does not have a very steady base, which will make it prone to being knocked over (like when reaching for the snooze button - which you can't see because it's not illuminated and there's no backlight) and I'm not sure this thing would survive being knocked over. Sorry to say, but for $70, this just seems very cheaply built from the mechanical side of things.
3. I guess this is obvious in hindsight, but the actual time display is tiny, maybe an inch tall. Granted, you have the projector, which works as advertised (only when it's dark in the room - projection is photo-sensitively switched on/off - no other option), but seeing the clock from across the room during daylight (when the projector is not on) is not really possible unless you've got astronaut eyes.
4. There are no alarm options and the only existing tone is - IMHO - obnoxious and too loud - a sort of high-pitched staccato double-chirp. I realize this is a personal issue, but a few buzzer options would have been nice.
5. There is absolutely no way that the battery cover on the outdoor sensor will keep the elements out of the sensor. Maybe this isn't an issue if you have a protected outdoor place to locate the sensor - but if there's any moisture at all, this thing won't last one winter here in Michigan.
In summary:
Electronics: Acceptable and as advertised, tho the few things I mentioned could be better
Mechanical: unacceptably cheap, shoddy assembly fit & finish for this price point.

From The Weather Channel by La Crosse Technology, this versatile projection weather station shines the outdoor temperature and time in large, red digits on the ceiling or wall for easy nighttime illumination. The radio-controlled clock regularly resets to match the US Atomic Clock and adapts for daylight savings time. Based on temperature and barometric pressure, the weather station gives the forecast using 24 graphic icons and tendency arrows. The weather station even provides a personal weather boy, Oscar, who models what one might wear given current outside conditions.
The weather station’s LCD screen displays the time, date, perpetual calendar, US time zone map, and weather conditions. Pushing a button temporarily engages the EL backlight for dimmer settings. To wake sleeping users, the weather station offers a dual alarm with an adjustable snooze. The station monitors indoor humidity levels and indoor temperatures from 14.2 to 139.8 degrees F. Celsius readings are also available. For outdoor conditions, an included TX7U sensor communicates at a 433 MHz frequency from up to 330 feet. The sensor registers humidity levels and temperatures ranging from –21.8 to +157.8 degrees F. The unit also records minimum and maximum readings for indoor and outdoor temperatures and humidity percentages. For the most accurate results, install the sensor in a covered location away from direct rain or sun. The base accommodates up to three sensors. Place the freestanding base at least six feet from intended projection surface. To enable constant projection, the weather station comes with a 120-volt AC adapter. The separate purchase of five AA batteries is required. Covered by a limited one-year warranty, the weather station monitor measures 6-2/3 inches wide by 2-9/10 inches deep by 4-1/2 inches high, and the sensor measures 1-3/4 inches wide by 1 inch deep by 6-1/4 inches high.

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct Four Day Weather Forecaster Review

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct Four Day Weather Forecaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I agree with the other reviewers who dislike the form function of this product. It works well enough, but I know if the temperature of the room I'm standing in is comfortable or not -- what I DON'T know is what it will be like outside! Unfortunately, the indoor temperature can be constantly displayed, but the outdoor temperature either scrolls intermittently on the bottom of the screen (stand around a while waiting for it to get to the info you want), or you have to push a button on the back of the machine. UNFORTUNATELY, the button you push to get outdoor temp is right next to the alarm button. My wife and I have accidentally set the alarm when simply trying to view the outdoor temperature -- which we found out when it went off in the middle of the night.
The scrolling info on the bottom of the screen isn't very useful -- except for the outdoor temperature, it simply repeats the information on the rest of the screen (i.e., tomorrow will be cloudy, next day chance of rain, etc.) and is rather distracting.
I gave it 3 stars because it has a lot of information (3 day forcast, and can hit buttons to find out morning, noon and night info for each of those days, as well), and if you're looking for that, it's good, though its forcast highs and lows seem off (note you need an internet connection and a router to get the forcasts, that get sent wirelessly to the unit from the doohickey attached to your router). But if you're looking for something that will give you easy access to real-time outdoor temperature (frankly, as we were -- this was bought for us as a present), then go with something else.

La Crosse Technology TX7U Temperature Sensor Review

La Crosse Technology TX7U Temperature Sensor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this TX7U sensor as an added measurement zone for a La Crosse/The Weather Channel Weather display that I bought over a year ago to monitor my front and back yards - the system originally used TX4U sensors that read temperature and humidity and relayed the data by UHF telemetry to the base display. Since the TX4U is no longer available, I purchased the TX7U, which is fully compatible. The nice thing about the TX7U is that in addition to sending live data to a base display up to 300 feet away, that it also has a built-in LCD display that shows the actual temperature and relative humidity (no need to go back to the base display to see what is being sent). I use this sensor as my third zone (my base unit displays up to 3 zones) inside my greenhouse, where I overwinter tropical palm specimens that wouldn't survive the rare freezes we see in So. Cal. every 15 to 17 years. Now I can wake up in the middle of a cold night and glance over at the base display and see what the conditions in my greenhouse actually are. I highly recommend this sensor and the LaCrosse product line.

Monitor outdoor weather conditions from multiple locations of a yard by adding an extra wireless temperature sensor to a household La Crosse Technology weather station. The TX7U thermo-hygro sensor conveys outdoor temperature and humidity readings to a weather station receiver to enable users to plan appropriately for brisk, hot, or muggy weather. Additionally, the sensor benefits from a small LCD screen to display the temperature and relative humidity percentage.
For use with any La Crosse weather stations aside from the Professional Weather Series, or as a replacement for the obsolete TX4U sensor model, the TX7U sensor transmits to the receiver at a 433.92 MHz frequency from a distance of up to 330 feet. The sensor records outdoor relative humidity from 1 to 99 percent, while its outdoor temperature measurement capabilities range from -21.8 to +157.8 degrees F. To ensure the most accurate readings, install the sensor out of direct rain and sunlight. The sensor comes with a mounting bracket and hardware for stand alone or wall mounting. For power the sensor, the separate purchase of two AA batteries is required. A limited one-year warranty covers this item. The sensor measures 1-3/4 inches wide by 1 inch deep by 6-1/5 inches high and weighs 1 pound upon shipping.

I like the way this unit gathers all the information from the internet without needing your computer running. All the important information is there. However the presentation is poor. The three day advance weather forecast is displayed in the middle, therefore there is no need to have it scroll across the bottom which is hard to read. It comes with an outside temp probe but you can not display the outside temp easily, you have to wait till it scrolls across the bottom. The daily forecast is broken up in AM PM Evening etc. However it would be nice if it changed with current time of day, but it doesn't you have to cycle through it manually. Too much scrolling and not a constant display of current conditions. It's a shame, it has all the information you would want, but just does a poor job of displaying it. I returned it.

La Crosse Technology TX27U-IT 915 MHz Wireless Temperature Sensor with LCD Review

La Crosse Technology TX27U-IT 915 MHz Wireless Temperature Sensor with LCD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This La Crosse Technology TX27U-IT 915 MHz Wireless Temperature Sensor with LCD is the same Model TX27U-IT that comes standard with and works at the outdoor transmitter for the La Crosse Technology WS-9121U-IT-CBP Wireless Thermometer, which accepts a total of three sensor/transmitters - two in addition to the standard one that come with the wireless thermometer. If you have this particular La Crosse Wireless Thermometer, adding these is an excellent way to monitor the temperature in a child's bedroom, a greenhouse, a back year, a basement or any number of other locations.
The specs note that the TX27U-IT sensor has a range of 330 feet (100 m). I've tested mine at about 250 feet away, and have it mounted outside behind foliage and part of the building about 175 feet away - it works just fine. The 330 feet should be considered as in "open air" with no obstructions and that radio waves like this don't curve around objects. The actual transmission range depends on how many obstructions (walls, floors, the roof, ceilings, outdoor foliage, etc.) are in the way, and could cut the signal range in half.
Please also note that this is NOT a dual channel model with humidity, rainfall, snow measurement, local bug count, political affiliations of those who pass by or any other function combined. It senses temperature... and that's it, and it should only be used with other La Crosse 915 MHz weather instruments. If in doubt, check the La Crosse site on the 'Net for more info, or call their customer support people.
The La Crosse Technology TX29U-IT 915 MHz Wireless Temperature Sensor is anther model that that is similar in function, but it lacks the LCD panel. The La Crosse Technology TX37U-IT 915 Mhz Wireless Temperature Sensor is also similar, and also lacks the LCD temperature display, but is a weather resistant solution where direct exposure could be a factor.
In any case, these are excellent solutions if you want to expand the capability of the wireless thermometer mentioned above... and remember, no more than a total of three remote sensor/transmitters can be used with this unit!

Check the outdoor temperature from multiple locations of a yard by adding an extra wireless temperature sensor to a separately-purchased La Crosse Technology weather station. For use with any La Crosse 915 MHz weather system with IT technology, the TX27U-IT wireless sensor transmits outdoor temperature readings from -39.8 to 139.8 degrees F to the system receiver to help users to plan appropriately for brisk or hot weather. Additionally, the sensor provides on-site temperatures on its small LCD; this sensor does not evaluate humidity or air pressure. At a 915 MHz frequency, the sensor communicates from a distance of up to 330 feet unobstructed. Transmission through walls reduces the wireless range. Using the provided mounting bracket, install the sensor in a sheltered location to protect it from rain and direct sunlight. This sensor also can be employed for indoor temperature monitoring. For power, the sensor requires one CR2032 cell battery. A limited one-year warranty covers this item. The sensor measures approximately 1-1/2 inches wide by 1/2 inch deep by 3-1/2 inches high.

La Crosse Technology WS-9121U-IT-CBP Wireless Thermometer/Clock with Remote Outdoor Temperature Sensor Review

La Crosse Technology WS-9121U-IT-CBP Wireless Thermometer/Clock with Remote Outdoor Temperature Sensor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Do you remember those old mercury-filled indoor/outdoor thermometers that we used to squint at, wondering if the temperature was really correct? Do you remember how the outdoor sensor used to get broken after a few years, usually by a window being lowered too hard on its sensor wire?
That's not a problem with this La Crosse Technology WS-9121U-IT-CBP Wireless Thermometer, a great little unit that displays the time, along with indoor and outdoor temperature, in either °F or °C. It's LCD digital display is clear and easy to read, and is split into three sections, showing the time, indoor temperature and outdoor temperature. The outdoor temperature display is updated about every 16 seconds via a 915 MHz wireless signal, eliminating the need for wires.
The base unit, or receiver, measures 4.66" high, 2.29" wide and 0.69" deep, and has the option of being mounted in its flat base (see the photos) or wall mounted... and they even include the screws and wall anchors. Setup of the receiver is simple, and takes just a couple of minutes once the AAA batteries (not included) are installed in the base unit.
The smaller outdoor sensor (Model TX27U-IT) is a simple rectangular transmitter, measuring 3.5 x 1.5 x 0.53 inches, and it has a small LCD to allow for viewing temperatures while outdoors. It also has a flat base that can be mounted outdoors in a variety of ways, or with the screws and wall anchors. And the sensor does come with a CR2032 battery, which they say will last about a year. The directions say that this can be placed outdoors up to 330 feet away. I tested it at about 250 feet away, and it works just fine.
During the setup I found one strange quirk: if you set the time to 24-hour mode, the temperature indictor switches to °C, and in 12-hour mode, it automatically goes to °F. I personally didn't find this to be a show-stopper, just a mild curiosity. Did a quick accuracy check to see how much difference there was between the base unit and the outdoor sensor, and after awhile gave up, as they seemed to be at most 0.6 °F apart, which is better than I expected. There's a MIN/MAX button on the indoor receiver unit so that you can see the readings for both indoors and outdoors. Pros:
- It's very accurate.
- Just set it up and forget it - it works.
- Excellent instruction book, in English Spanish & French.
Cons:
- It can't predict the weather.Did you want to monitor the temperature in other areas, such as a baby's room, a greenhouse and your back yard, but all at once? This particular La Crosse Technology Wireless Thermometer already comes with a single TX27U-IT 915 MHz sensor, as previously noted, and will accept a total of three 915 MHz sensors - two in addition to the original. This can be a problem if you're not sure what your looking for, as there are dual-channel transmitters that will not work with this unit -- RTFM!

There are a couple available here that will work with the WS-9121U-IT-CBP receiver. The La Crosse Technology TX27U-IT 915 MHz Wireless Temperature Sensor with LCD is the identical unit to the one that comes with this wireless thermometer. The simpler La Crosse Technology TX37U-IT 915 Mhz Wireless Temperature Sensor has no LCD display, but is weather resistant, and excellent for use in outdoor areas where exposure to the elements might be something to consider. The point is that if you want to monitor the temperature in up to three remote areas plus where the base unit sits, you just need to pick the right sensor/transmitter.
Must admit that it was the quality that I had found in the excellent La Crosse Technology BC-900 AlphaPower Battery Charger that heavily influenced my purchase of this product over others on the market, and it has easily lived up to my expectations.
Had tested a few of these wireless thermometers and temperature stations from various manufacturers, and found some to be complete crap. One of the good ones was the La Crosse Technology WS-9013U-CBP Wireless Temperature Station, which offers the date on the LCD panel and its time is updated by radio signal. On the downside its outdoor wireless (433.92MHz) temperature sensor has a maximum range of "up to 80 feet." And be aware that transmission through walls and/or heavy foliage reduces the range on all of these.
If you're looking for a reliable indoor/outdoor thermometer without getting into a full professional weather station, the La Crosse Technology WS-9121U-IT-CBP wireless thermometer is very hard to beat.

La Crosse Technology TX6U Wireless Temperature Sensor Review

La Crosse Technology TX6U Wireless Temperature Sensor
Average Reviews:

The specs on this unit are +/- 2 degrees "under normal conditions". That probably means "at room temperature." At winter temps, freezing and below, this unit is over 5 degrees off. La Crosse more or less admits to this on their web site. The saddest thing is that the LaCrosse base stations display outside temperatures to 1/10th of a degree - for a sensor that is +/- 2 degrees at best and generally not even that close.

I purchased this clock for my classroom. After several low performing clocks that either gained, lost or all together stopped time this one is a champ. I don't ever look forward to "falling back" and losing daylight in the evening but I am anxious to see my clock handle it all on its own!

La Crosse Technology XG-55 Digital Altimeter/Compass Watch Review

La Crosse Technology XG-55 Digital Altimeter/Compass Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title of my review is about the kindest thing I can say about this product. The LaCrosse XG-55 is indeed a nice, feature-filled watch with practical instruments that function well, but it has several glaring deficiencies and annoying peculiarities.
First let me mention something positive, for those that know this genre of watch (altimeter/barometer/thermometer/compass), that the XG-55 (at about 50 bucks) is an outstanding value. If you buy a similar/equivalent product from Suunto or High Gear (even Casio), you will pay several hundred dollars more and not get much better performance. So that is a big plus for the XG-55. For the cost of one Suunto, you can buy four new XG-55's (and toss em out when you've used them up). I'm making reference to the fact that Suuntos run through batteries at a prodigious rate.
Another advantage IMO is it's relative size. It is noticeably smaller and thinner in profile than the Suunto. The XG-55 is about the size of the High Gear Altus.
The barometric altimeter seems fairly accurate, as I've tested it in many places (from Seattle's Space Needle to Donner Summit) and it read within a few feet of the posted altitude. The compass is also reasonably accurate also and comes in handy for quick orientation esp indoors and while driving (i.e. "take the N exit" "where's North?"). I have little use for the barometer function, but I notice that the little weather icon is generally pretty accurate, like when it shows a raincloud, it usually rains shortly thereafter. I like the electronic thermometer, but it will usually read your body temperature when it is on your wrist. I have learned that by subtracting approximately 14 degrees from the reading, it will be about the actual ambient temperature. The Indiglo type backlight is good, but tends to run down the battery fast (so I eschew using it unless absolutely necessary). The other watch functions work effectively (2 alarms, stopwatch, timer, dual time, etc.).
The most serious problem with this watch is it's "water resistance". It is really not. Wearing the watch while washing the dishes, walking through a rainstorm, or taking a shower will breech the watertight seal and you will find your cover crystal fogging up. In the XG-55's defense, I will just mention that I have had the same experience with both the Suunto and the High Gear Altus. LaCrosse has generously replaced my watch 3 times (each time the watertight seal failed).
Also, under practical use, I have found that some of the buttons tend to protrude too far from the case and have a tendency to deploy inadvertently. Like, I would glance down to look at the time... and I discover half the time that barometric millibars of mercury is displayed instead. Or, I prefer to have the temperature displayed in the little top (secondary) display box, but it often gets switched to air pressure trends (a graph) or the date instead. Very aggravating, esp when you just want to quickly know the time. Again, I will mention in it's defense, that I have had the same problems with some of the other more expensive watches also. About the only watch that routinely recesses their buttons sufficiently, I've noticed, is Casio.
Yes, as someone mentioned already the case is painted plastic. I have noticed that the edges quickly become worn and lose their paint. Even the bezel ring seems to fade and lose it's colour. But, again, what did you expect for such a bargain price? (an all titanium case??) So far I have not had any trouble with the watchband, and in fact, I kind of like it's design which allows some comfortable ventilation.
Overall, I feel that there are enough positives that outweigh all of the negatives, so I would go ahead and recommend this watch. Just remember that it's an inexpensive alternative (to the $200-$300 watches in this class) and, IMO, you get what you pay for.

A nice choice for the outdoor explorer or the urban adventurer, the XG-55 watch from La Crosse Technology is a multi-function unit great for telling time, marking laps, and monitoring local conditions. Complete with an integrated compass, the watch features a digital time display, a chronograph mode, and a temperature gauge, as well as an altimeter mode and a barometer mode, both with history graphs. It includes a 100-lap memory feature, a setting for dual time display, and a countdown timer with quick-set values. Sleek and relatively slim in profile, the design also includes an EL backlight and a case that is water-resistant up to 30 feet. Its two-tone gray and black color scheme is attractive without flashiness, and the band is flexible and comfortable. La Crosse Technology includes an instructional DVD.
