Polder Timer with Vibrating Alarm - White Review

Polder Timer with Vibrating Alarm - White
Average Reviews:

Simply put, this is the best, simple timer with a vibrate and light function, added. I don't know why they discontinued it. It tends to eat the battery a bit when you set all functions to go off at once, but then it comes back when you just put one on... I didn't consider it a problem at all, as I use it for meditation, and didn't need a super loud beeping. Love it. Bring it back.

Progressive International Little Timer Review

Progressive International Little Timer
Average Reviews:

Isn't this a cute and stylish timer? That's what I thought when I bought it...but as a timer it's useless. The buzzer is so faint and short, that you have to be standing nearby in the kitchen to hear it. Tonight I burned what would have been a wonderful pie because I was in another room when this weak buzzer sounded-and I didn't hear a thing.
I've had it! I've just ordered the Oregon Scientific digital timer to replace this cheap thing.

Polder Single See-Through Timer - Silver Review

Polder Single See-Through Timer - Silver

I bought this on impulse for the kitchen/ cooking and discovered it is a very useful little device for timing my work. I am a freelance writer and need to take frequent (90 minute) breaks to prevent arm, wrist and hand strain from using the computer. Never makes a mistake and the beep is loud enough, though it does have its limits -- it is not loud enough to hear in another room. PS - learning how to use it takes a minute or two, but is worth the effort.

Oxo Good Grips Digital Timer, Silver Review

Oxo Good Grips Digital Timer, Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've bought a number of Oxo kitchen accessories, and found them to be sturdy, remarkably well designed, and easy to use.
Unfortunately, this timer is an exception.
It has the usual features typical of timers at this price point: clock plus timer, ten number keys for input, memory, etc. But instead of being flat with a magnet on the back so it can fall off the refrigerator like other timers, it's round like a traditional wind-up kitchen timer. It's solid-feeling and has nice non-skid feet on the bottom.
The problem is the display. It's horrible. For three reasons:
First, the numbers are small -- smaller than any other timer I've seen. They're about 1/4" high, half or less the size of those on comparable timers.
Second, the numbers are recessed 1/8" or more beneath a clear plastic cover, not on the surface -- it's dark in there and feels like looking down a well. It desperately needs a backlight, but there is none. Unless the light source is shining directly into the display, there's a large dark shadow covering part of the numbers. But that causes the third problem:
The clear plastic cover over the numbers is both curved and highly reflective, and it's virtually impossible to arrange things so that there isn't a reflection shining back into your eyes .
The bottom line is that I have to fiddle around to get the timer, the light source, and myself into a position where I can read the small, dark, shadowed, and reflective display. Not what I need when I'm trying to cook.
It's just not worth it. Since I have several other timers with displays I don't have to strain to read, I use this one as a paperweight. I'd have to say it works very well.
I just don't understand how Oxo managed to let such a flawed design out the door.

Used it for a 5K run. The clock was very easy to read in the bright sunlight. We will be mounting it above the finish line next year so it's easier for runners to see as they cross the line. Kind of complicated to get it set to start timing, the instructions are good, but have to be followed carefully. Don't lose them. Very good clock for half the price of most of the other ones we found. Numbers are two inches tall which seems small but can be seen just fine from 15 feet away. We ran an extension cord from a building to where we had the clock set up.

Talking Timer with Clock Review

Talking Timer with Clock

I have been using mine for almost 4 years. I play paintball and ref paintball tournaments. This is as about as handy a item as you would ever want. I finally ordered me a new one, after my old radio shack one's clip broke off. It still works just fine, just no way to clip it onto my glove. Batteries lasted me almost two years, so you wont need to be buying batteries every other month like one of the others I tried after my clip broke off my old one.
Weather you play paintball or just need something that talks the time to you, counting up or counting down, this is a handy item. I would give it a 5 rating, but the clips on the back arent the strongest, and tend to break off. Other then the clip I have never had an ounce of problem with mine.

Taylor Chef's Digital Timer and Stopwatch Clock Review

Taylor Chef's Digital Timer and Stopwatch Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my Taylor professional digital timer/stopwatch for 5 years now, and it's still going strong. I really like being able to hang it around my neck when I have to leave the kitchen - and it faces the right way when I pick it up to check the time remaining. I'd hate to have a clip instead; those are often flimsy and easy to knock out of position. The magnet sticks firmly to the fridge when I'm not using the timer, so I always know where to find it.
The only vaguely negative thing I have to say is that although the display is adequate, I'd appreciate larger numbers. [EDIT May 5, 2010: This product seems to be an updated version of the one I got 5 years ago, and the numbers are indeed larger than the one I have. Yay, Taylor!]
This is a must-have item for anyone who doesn't want to hover around the kitchen so's not to miss the timer going off. When my mom used mine, she went right out and got herself one!

Polder TMR-540 Opus Digital Triple Timer with Clock, Stainless Steel and Black Review

Polder TMR-540 Opus Digital Triple Timer with Clock, Stainless Steel and Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've decided to keep it, because it has three timers, it is very pretty, and I love the display of the dots around the outer ring to mark the seconds (much easier to read than the usual rapid numerical countdown of seconds). However, setting the timer is really not very convienient (note- I am tech-savvy, so this is not a problem on the user-end). You have to hold the timer button down for two seconds to be able to change the timer setting (similar to accessing the time-change function on a watch) at which point it emits a VERY loud beep, louder than the actual timer alarm. This seems odd to me, since you probably won't be next to it when the alarm goes off, but you have to be when you have your hands on it to set it. Anyhow, if at this point you accidentally hit the timer button again before setting the hours/minutes/seconds for the timer, you will enter count-up mode, and if the unit is counting up, it doesn't allow you to set the timer, or clear the settings. If this happens, you have to hit the timer button again to pause the count-up mode, at which point it will allow you to enter the timer change mode again (via the two-second timer button press with the loud beep). Personally, I think it would be nice if it would automatically clear the last timer setting when you enter the timer change mode- as it is, once you are in change mode you need to manually press and hold the hour and minute buttons down together to clear the last timer setting, then you can start fresh from zero. If this sounds confusing and/or frustrating, this may not be the timer you are looking for. Frankly, I'm not sure it was the timer I'm looking for either... but I think I'll make it work.

Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer Review

Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Polder Electronic Clock, Timer, Stopwatch combination several years ago and paid around $16. (It has currently been lowered to $14 - $16, depending on the color) I loved the product and would have liked to have gotten more, but the price was more than I cared to spend. When searching through Amazon's kitchen gadgets, I noticed the Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer appeared remarkably similar. Needing an additional $7 to qualify for free shipping, the extra $2 to have another timer seemed reasonable.
When this timer arrived, I laid it next to my Polder and the two are absolutely identical, with the exception of the blank space which located on the center, bottom of the unit and is just to the left of the display screen. The Pinzon timer's is blank, the Polder timer has their name imprinted there.
The multiple functions on this timer are extremely useful. I particularly like the fact that the timer continues to "buzz" for a long period of time after it goes off. (It does stop buzzing after what seems like several minutes.) I sometimes neglect to carry the timer with me and don't hear it immediately which can have disasterous results if a timer shuts off after a minute. Further, once the timer goes off, the unit begins to count up so that the user actually knows by what length of time they missed the mark. This is useful when baking since it allows the user to know how "off" their product may be due to overcooking. Additionally, the timer allows one to set it for lengthy periods, unlike some older timers which limit one to 99 minutes. The portability feature is useful - I like the magnet on the back which allows me to stick this up on the metal door in the garage when I am working outside.
My husband finds the stopwatch/count up function useful when he is doing his physical therapy. He can sit the unit on the bench and watch it count up the 10 seconds he is to hold his stretches - saves continually setting the timer or having to count and then getting distracted and losing count.
The clock setting instructions are unclear, but I found a comment on Amazon's site with the trick to setting the time. Hold down the clock button until the time clears. Then enter the numbers as follows: enter two digits for each unit of time, using leading zeros when the number is a single digit. For example, if it is 8:15:09 am, one should enter "08", "15", "09". That's all there is to it.
One caveat - it may be me, but I find that the readout is more difficult to read on the black cased unit as opposed to my Polder which has a white case. There is no difference in clarity of the displays, so it is probably the contrast which makes the Polder's display a bit easier to use. This may be something to consider if the user has vision problems.
I definitely recommend this unit over the Polder as it is nearly identical (Polder has changed the stop/clear button colors on the newer units.) at a significantly lower price. In fact, I would take advantage of Amazon's 4 for 3 deal and purchase multiple units. One can never have too many timers!

I was looking for a good basic timer and this fit the bill. It allows you to count up or down and shows time elapsed after the alarm rings (to see how much I screwed up the cookies).
One feature I was looking for but wasn't apparent from the descriptions or photos is how the back is set up. I use the magnet, not the easel and attach it to the stove hood. With some timers the magnet is on the easel and the easel comes out from the back of the timer. Then when you push the timer buttons, it rocks back and forth on the easel, and usually falls into the soup. However, this timer has has the easel flush with the back of the timer. When attached to the hood, it does not rock back and forth when pushing the buttons. Big plus in my book. Sometimes it is just the small details.

This clock should be nominated to a prize for worst interface design. It is extremely unintuitive to use. For example, you would think the big black start/stop button could be used to start a timer. Not so. It can only be used to start all three timers simultaneously. When would you want to do this when you're cooking? It is also extremely cumbersome and unintuitive to set the timers. Not what you need when you're in a hectic cooking situation. Unfortunately, I have not yet found a good multiple cooking timer, even after spending a lot of time on amazon.com, so I'm keeping this for now.

Presto 04213 Electronic Digital Timer Review

Presto 04213 Electronic Digital Timer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first digital kitchen timer. I have used a mechanical timer made by Sunbeam but it broke after only a year or so of use. Compare to the mechanical timer, I like this far more.
It's made in China and the quality of the plastic and the built are better than you'd find in other products made in China, but not to the level of Japanese electronics or ipod. For me, it's very acceptable.
The dimension described in the product features, detail is wrong. It's not even the size of the package but close except the thickness. Actual dimensions are (17mm x 56mm x 67mm), and it's quite easily pocketable.
It has a magnet for keeping on the refrigerator door and paper clip that also function as a stand. When you open the clip half way, it opens wide enough for a paper or a card. When you open it all the way, small metal piece drops between the body and the clip to keep it open as a stand. When flip it upside down and open the clip all the way again, metal piece retract again. The clip also covers the battery compartment when it's closed. If anything gives you an impression that this is a cheaply made gadget, the battery cover will be it.
Operation is easy enough that you can skip the instruction. It has a minute button and a second button and the number only goes up, not down. Push both to clear the number. When the count down ends and the alarm kicks in, it sets the same numbers you put in before. If you want to start a new time, clear the display first then set the new time. It doesn't have on-off switch. I'm planning to use rechargeable battery, so this is not a problem for me.
The alarm makes 4 short beeps about every second and goes for about 30 seconds. It's loud enough in my pocket and that's the way I use it. Since it's small enough, there's no excuse leaving it in the kitchen.
This is a timer with simplest function for the cheapest price. If you need more functions, this is probably not a good choice. If you are used to mechanical timer, this will give you more than you need.
Highly recommended.
*update*(Jan-18-10)
I found that the timer won't work with rechargeable battery. It still uses the original battery came with it, so I'll post when it runs out. I use it several times every day.
*update*(11-30-10)
I accidentally put the timer in the washer and it had died. Putting it in the pocket wasn't such a good idea after all. The original battery came with the timer was working up until today, so I didn't see the end of it. The battery wasn't even alkaline, but so called Heavy Duty type. Alkaline AAA should last for a few years.

Some purist cooks claim to have an instinctive inner timer, but most people need a little help remembering when to take the roast out or punch down the bread dough for its second rise. This electronic timer fulfills that basic function. With an easy-to-read LCD display that shows minutes and seconds, the unit counts down from any time up to 99 minutes and 59 seconds. There's also a stopwatch function that's useful in many ways, and not necessarily only in the kitchen. An alarm signals when the time is up, and the memory function stores the last countdown time for reuse. The timer's versatile clip can also become an easel stand, and it has a magnet, too--it's good to go wherever it's needed. The handy gadget operates on one AAA battery, and it can be carefully wiped clean with a slightly damp rag as needed. The timer measures 2-1/2 by 2-1/4 by 1/2 inches.
