Blue Digital Sand Timer by Polder Review

Blue Digital Sand Timer by Polder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A problem was immediately apparent when I removed the Polder Digital Hourglass Kitchen Timer from its packaging: The reflection from the clear plastic covers over the LCD displays makes reading the time from more than couple of feet away very hard or impossible.
(What isn't apparent from the picture on the product page is that there are actually plastic coverings over the LCD screens, so the picture doesn't show any indication of the problem with reflection.)
A few more complaints:
(1) Although the aesthetics of the timer is quite appealing overall, the timer looks a lot more plasticky than it does in the picture from the product page. While the construction of the unit isn't exactly shoddy, it doesn't scream quality either.
(2) The timer malfunctioned on me once -- the display froze up (not sure what I did to cause that) and the only way I was able to unfreeze it was to remove the battery and put it back in.
(3) The unit is poorly packaged -- when I took the unit out of the package, it already had a few scratches on one side (probably came from the unit being bumped around in the package).
There *are* a couple of things I really like about the timer, however.
(1) When stood on one of its ends, the timer displays the clock; when it's inverted, the timer displays the countdown timer. Nifty!
(2) It continues to keep track of the time elapsed after the timer has counted down to zero.
The timer comes in red, silver, black, and white as well.
---
The Polder Digital Hourglass Kitchen Timer serves its intended purpose very well. But I would have to give it an overall rating of 3.5 stars because of the issue with the hard-to-read LCD displays and the slightly less-than-satisfactory quality of the build.

Polder 605 Big Screen Timer, Gray Review

Polder 605 Big Screen Timer, Gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you had set out to create a poorly designed kitchen timer, the Polder 605 Big Screen Timer would certainly make you happy on several fronts. Made out of flimsy plastic with a large display screen and simple bold black buttons, the sleek visuals of the Polder have their initial appeal. Putting it into use you realize quickly what a perverse genius designed this device. The alarm makes a high-pitched noise that is sure to put your entire household on edge. The thing is so top-heavy that if you attach it to your refrigerator via the magnet the slightest jolt will send the unit dangling upside down like a bat. In case you do manage to perch the thing upright just so, the upside-down wedge shape of the case makes it hard to read the display at anything much below eye-level.
When you go to turn it off it immediately starts counting back up again, as in a stopwatch, without you asking it to, so you must press the start/stop button two times if you really want it to stop, and then press both time buttons to zero it. As noted in another review, you cannot set it for less than a minute so the seconds are a mystery, unless it's in stopwatch mode, in which case the seconds are displayed. On the upside, unlike any other timer I have used before, if you have it set for an hour or more it helpfully beeps at ten and five minutes before zero. And the screen is nice and big, as advertised.
I suppose if you are planning to set it on your counter top instead of using the magnet, and didn't mind its screechiness and other quirks, you might get some use out of this unassuming unit. In our home it earns its one extra star by providing some comic relief after the holidays.

Polder Traffic Light Kitchen Timer, White Review

Polder Traffic Light Kitchen Timer, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This timer is perfect for classrooms. It is easy to set, and has magnetic bottoms that allow you to stick it to a desk or a magnetic chalkboard/white board. Because it changes colors students can see when time is nearly up for an activity even if they cannot read the numbers from the back of the room.
It has a fairly large display. It is also loud enough to be heard even in the loudest classrooms, (like when you are playing review games.)
I teach high school math and I use mine all the time! I even use it for state testing. I would recommend this to any teacher, but I think it would really shine in an Elementary setting.
I like it so much I even bring it home sometimes because it is louder than my stove or microwave timer, and I can stick it almost anywhere.
The buttons are exposed and easily pressed. This might not be the timer for you if you are looking for something that won't go off in a backpack or briefcase.
It also starts counting up after time runs out so you can see how long it has been ringing. Very nice for cooking when you are also working outside or catch the alarm after it's been going off for a while.
Super product.
Great timer. Good price.

Polder Cooking Thermometer with Timer and Clock Review

Polder Cooking Thermometer with Timer and Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great item to have in your kitchen. It makes cook so much easier. You can tell exactly when a roast is done or a chicken is cooked to a high enough temp.
You can set the clock to beep at a certain time, or at a set temperature. I like that it has a magnet on the back. I'm able to store my unit on the refridgerator and use it as a timer too.
It is a small unit and that makes for easy storage.
Although I haven't had any problems with mine yet, I'd just be warned that all over the directions it talks about the damage that water and other liquids can cause. I'm very careful with my unit, but I can see how, with very little effort, it can be ruined by liquids.
I did some research before buying this. I found that there were cheaper ones out there that won't work as well or may have more problems. I also found better quality ones that don't seem so fragile, but they were also much more expensive. For the money, I thought this was one of the best buys.
If something did happen and I ruined this one, I'd buy a new one with out hesitation. It is just that useful to have around.

Polder Original Cooking All-In-One Timer/Thermometer Review

Polder Original Cooking All-In-One Timer/Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the Polder 362-90 for about 5 years. I purchased it after seeing Alton Brown using one on the Food Channel show "Good Eats". Now, I'd be lost without it. It takes all the guesswork out of roasting chicken or turkey or a roast beef or whatever else you care to cook in your oven.
You insert the metal probe into whatever you're cooking, set the target temperature and start roasting. When your roast reaches the desired temperature, the Polder will beep to let you know. Perfectly cooked. No wiggling Mrs. Chicken's legs, no pressing on the roast, no "Gee, is it done? I'm not sure." It couldn't be easier.
It has a countdown timer (but not a clock) as well. The back of the main unit has 2 strong magnets which allow it to be attached to any metallic surface, vertical or horizontal. The LCD pivots, so no matter where you put the unit, you can tilt the LCD to make it easy to read. A slide switch on the back allows you to change between Farenheit and Centigrade.
When you wash the probe, you *must* be careful. The probe is a metal tube that contains a temperature sensor. At the point where the cable from the main unit enters this tube, it is sealed merely by crimping the tube. It isn't waterproof. So during washing, if you allow water around this area, it will find its way into the tube and kill the sensor. This is the basis, I believe, for many of the complaints regarding the probe's fragility.
I wrap my hand tightly around the top of the probe when I wash it to prevent this from happening, and I'm still using the original. I use it at least twice a month, so that means it has been used at least 100 times and washed 100 times and it works fine. As far as complaints that the sensor is inaccurate, I've got 100+ perfectly cooked chickens, turkeys and roast beefs that contradict that assertion.
If I have a complaint its that the thing has no on/off switch! Its always running and, therefore, draining the AAA battery. This is not a big deal. The first battery lasted about 3 years and the one in it now has about 2 years of use and is still going strong. When the temperature reads "LO", that is the indicator that the battery needs replacement.
The Polder 362-90 allows you to know when your roast is done instead of guessing at it. I find it essential and I recommend it. Just be careful when you wash it.
***UPDATE 6/2010: After 10+ years of faithful service, my Polder finally quit working. I immediately ordered another. The new one worked accurately twice and then began to underreport temperature by about 30 to 40 degrees F. I tried a backup probe and a new battery with the same result so it would appear to be a problem with the main unit and not the probe. I see that many of the most recent reviews for this product complain of a similar issue. I think Polder may have a manufacturing problem. I would defer purchasing this product until the reviews turn positive again.

An ultra handy and high tech thermometer, the Polder takes a lot of the guesswork out of cooking. It has a pre-settable alarm that works simultaneously with temperature as well as time. Set the alarm to automatically go off when it reaches the temperature you set, or set it to go off when your set amount of time has elapsed. The pre-settable alarm temperature range is from 32 to 392 degrees F, and the alarm is a loud 5-minute alarm. It comes equipped with a longer probe wire measuring 43 inches long. The unit requires one AAA battery for power, and one battery comes included. It also comes equipped with memory for frequently used settings. The Polder makes a great gift idea for any kitchen enthusiast.

Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer Review

Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Polder Electronic Clock, Timer, Stopwatch combination several years ago and paid around $16. (It has currently been lowered to $14 - $16, depending on the color) I loved the product and would have liked to have gotten more, but the price was more than I cared to spend. When searching through Amazon's kitchen gadgets, I noticed the Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer appeared remarkably similar. Needing an additional $7 to qualify for free shipping, the extra $2 to have another timer seemed reasonable.
When this timer arrived, I laid it next to my Polder and the two are absolutely identical, with the exception of the blank space which located on the center, bottom of the unit and is just to the left of the display screen. The Pinzon timer's is blank, the Polder timer has their name imprinted there.
The multiple functions on this timer are extremely useful. I particularly like the fact that the timer continues to "buzz" for a long period of time after it goes off. (It does stop buzzing after what seems like several minutes.) I sometimes neglect to carry the timer with me and don't hear it immediately which can have disasterous results if a timer shuts off after a minute. Further, once the timer goes off, the unit begins to count up so that the user actually knows by what length of time they missed the mark. This is useful when baking since it allows the user to know how "off" their product may be due to overcooking. Additionally, the timer allows one to set it for lengthy periods, unlike some older timers which limit one to 99 minutes. The portability feature is useful - I like the magnet on the back which allows me to stick this up on the metal door in the garage when I am working outside.
My husband finds the stopwatch/count up function useful when he is doing his physical therapy. He can sit the unit on the bench and watch it count up the 10 seconds he is to hold his stretches - saves continually setting the timer or having to count and then getting distracted and losing count.
The clock setting instructions are unclear, but I found a comment on Amazon's site with the trick to setting the time. Hold down the clock button until the time clears. Then enter the numbers as follows: enter two digits for each unit of time, using leading zeros when the number is a single digit. For example, if it is 8:15:09 am, one should enter "08", "15", "09". That's all there is to it.
One caveat - it may be me, but I find that the readout is more difficult to read on the black cased unit as opposed to my Polder which has a white case. There is no difference in clarity of the displays, so it is probably the contrast which makes the Polder's display a bit easier to use. This may be something to consider if the user has vision problems.
I definitely recommend this unit over the Polder as it is nearly identical (Polder has changed the stop/clear button colors on the newer units.) at a significantly lower price. In fact, I would take advantage of Amazon's 4 for 3 deal and purchase multiple units. One can never have too many timers!

I, too, have had nothing but trouble from this timer. It worked fine for the first month or six weeks, although as others have noted the buttons are excessively debounced and have to be pressed and held to function. After that initial period of unenthusiastic mild satisfaction, however, it began to "freeze" sporadically and, more recently, continuously. Even the kids now know how to remove the battery cover, take the battery out for a few seconds, and replace it to reset the timer. I ordered a new (different) timer today, and figured I'd stop by here and leave this review while I was thinking about it. Avoid this thing.

Polder TMR-897 See-Thru Triple Timer/Clock, Silver
Average Reviews:

This clock should be nominated to a prize for worst interface design. It is extremely unintuitive to use. For example, you would think the big black start/stop button could be used to start a timer. Not so. It can only be used to start all three timers simultaneously. When would you want to do this when you're cooking? It is also extremely cumbersome and unintuitive to set the timers. Not what you need when you're in a hectic cooking situation. Unfortunately, I have not yet found a good multiple cooking timer, even after spending a lot of time on amazon.com, so I'm keeping this for now.

Polder 893-90 Dual Kitchen 20-Hour Timer/Clock/Stopwatch Review

Polder 893-90 Dual Kitchen 20-Hour Timer/Clock/Stopwatch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this timer based on the recommendation of America's Test Kitchen testing lab. The timer works as advertised but the audible alarm is not very robust, you cannot hear it from another room. Control of all of the various functions is somewhat confusing, certainly non-intuitive.
Worse, the magnetic strip on the back of the timer is affixed to the plastic body with double-sided tape that will fail in very short order, allowing the magnet to separate from the body. My first timer fell off the front of my fridge onto a hard tile floor, shattering the case and destroying the timer. Amazon replaced that at no charge. A second timer did exactly the same thing after about a week's use, although this time I expected it and it only fell to the countertop.
Instead of the dual timer, I do recommend the Polder 898 Clock, Timer and Stopwatch, available in Black or White, $15.00. It is very loud, comes with a laynard so you can hang it around your neck, and is simple to use.

This product does exactly what it says. It's a clock (the least useful things it does), a count-up timer, and a count-down timer.
Carrying it around is a great idea, though the string could be a little longer.
One thing not mentioned in most reviewes is that all three functions operate simultaenously, that is you can time two functions at once, as well as looking at the clock..
Highly recommended.

I really like this timer. Its very easy to setup and has a nice big display, counts up and down. I have two gripes about it though. 1. you cannot turn the alarm off which can be irritating in some situations. Also the alarm does no shut off automatically after a given time, it just keeps going and going which is not always desired 2. The other thing is that the buttons are very exposed and have no cover so they can be easily depressed accidentally. If you want to run or walk with this in your pocket, forget it. For a kitchen of task timer in the house its perfect.
