La Crosse WS-8035U-IT Wireless 915mhz Forecast Station with Pressure Graph & In/Out Temps Review

La Crosse WS-8035U-IT Wireless 915mhz Forecast Station with Pressure Graph and In/Out Temps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a meteorologist. If I had it in my budget to get a professional weather station (like from Davis) for my home I would but until I do this station will serve nicely.
The display unit is nice and large, very easy to read. The base is narrow enough that I can set it on the kitchen window sill without worrying it will fall into the sink. The remote sensor is about 30-40 feet away, around the corner of the house. Our home has metal siding and the signal from the remote has to travel through two exterior walls and a window; we've had no reception problems.
The sensors are accurate. When I first put in the batteries (follow the instructions as another reviewer said) I let the outdoor sensor sit next to the indoor sensor for quite a while. The readings from the base unit and remote matched within 0.7 of a degree and 2% humidity.
The clock set itself within about an hour of putting in the batteries.
The base unit is easy to read and full of information. The unit records not only high and low temperature and humidity for both the indoor and outdoor sensors but also the date and time the reading was taken. If you were so inclined you could reset the measurements on 1 January, then on 31 December see when you had your highs and lows for the year.
I want to address a couple of comments by other reviewers. First, the specifications of the unit (found on page 23 of the manual downloadable from Amazon) clearly state the unit will only report outside temperatures to about -22F. Expecting La Crosse to do something about this is like buying a Geo Metro and complaining that you can't compete in NASCAR. The unit is not built for those extreme low temperatures. Don't buy it if it doesn't meet your needs.
Second, the Weather Channel reports measurements taken by a weather station (often at an airport or NWS office) that is in your cable viewing area. The Weather Channel is not reporting conditions in your backyard. Official measurments are taken using instruments housed in a shelter built to certain specifications, usually 4-6 feet off the ground. I've got my outdoor sensor stuck to the side of the house about 8-9 feet up. It's good enough for backyard meteorology but it's definitely doesn't meet requirements for official measurements.
Third, the reason the pressure tendency chart blinks (actually it's displayed in a scrolling fashion) is "to avoid burnout of the LCD". Manual, page 18, section I9.
Remember, the pressure displayed is station pressure. The values reported by the Weather Channel are converted to sea level pressure. Station pressure is affected by the height of the weather station; the higher you're located above sea level the lower the pressure displayed, compared to sea level pressure. Fortunately it's not the number that matters. What you're interested in as a weather watcher is the pressure tendency. If the pressure is dropping then look for worsening weather; likewise with increasing pressure you can expect conditions to improve.
All in all this is a nice package with many features found only on more expensive units.
------------------
Update 25 Aug 2007
------------------
The unit is still going strong after a year, though the outside sensor died. It fell off the side of the house a couple of times - it's possible that had something to do with it. Fortunately the replacement sensor is only $15 here on Amazon, though it doesn't come with a weather shield. I have it under an eave, but I still may seal the new sensor (La Crosse Technology TX6U Wireless Temperature Sensor) with silicon as a precaution.
I didn't realize how much I looked at the thing until the sensor died...I'm going through data withdrawal now.
Interestingly, the unit is now branded as "The Weather Channel" wireless weather station. When I bought this it was just a regular old wireless weather station. Perhaps TWC branding is the reason the price has gone up since last year.

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WD-3105U 4-Day Internet-Powered Wireless Forecaster, Titanium Review

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WD-3105U 4-Day Internet-Powered Wireless Forecaster, Titanium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The weather direct weather station was easy to set up, the instuctions were easy to follow. If I could change one thing about the weather station it would be how it displays the outdoor temperature. The outdoor temperature scrolls on the bottom of the screen, along with a written description of the weather report, and the name of the city the forcast is for. I don't like that you have to wait for the outdoor temperature to show up. I would rather it was available on the display all of the time. So far, the weather reports have been quite accurate. Some of the "expandable" features that it lists in the product description are available only if you pay for a subscription. For example, you have to pay if you want to view forcasts for more than one location or want severe weather alerts. If you are only wanting to see the forecast for one location its not a problem. Overall, I'm very pleased with the product.
Edit: I'm not so pleased with this product anymore. It quit working after about 6 weeks and I haven't been able to get it working again. It turned out to be a waste of time and money.

With this La Crosse Technology internet-powered wireless forecaster, one can check the projected weather without flipping on the TV, radio, or computer. The Weather Direct WD-3102U four-day forecaster sends free internet forecasts for the user-selected location to the display unit. A provided AC-powered gateway connects with a secure LAN cable to a network router for internet transmissions, whether or not the computer is on. Upon online registration, the user chooses the forecast location from over 60,000 US and Canadian locations. The forecaster also provides the outdoor temperature, measured from right outside the front door with the included TX-50U wireless sensor.
The titanium-framed display stands alone, or wall hangs. The current day’s forecast, internet-set time, and indoor temperature occupy the top LCD. In the center section, sky condition icons and projected high and low temperatures predict the next three days’ weather; forecasts update every six hours. The selected location, location forecast, sunrise/sunset times, and outdoor temperature scroll across the bottom LCD section. Additional function keys enable adjustments to LCD contrast, scrolling speed, and volume, Fahrenheit/Celsius selection, alarm setting, five-minute snooze activation, and viewing micro forecasts for morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Communicating with the display from up to 330 feet unobstructed, both the gateway and the outdoor sensor come with mounting hardware. Install the sensor out of direct rain and sunlight. No additional software or Wi-Fi connection is required. However, the system does necessitate high-speed internet service, a network router, and the separate purchase of two C and two AA batteries. A limited one-year warranty covers the forecaster. The display measures 4-4/5 inches wide by 1-1/2 inches deep by 5-1/5 inches high.

Weather Light Review

Weather Light
Average Reviews:

I have a few atomic/weather instruments and this is the first time I tried Oregon Scientific products. When the clock arrived it was packaged very well, either for personal use or as a gift. The clock design is very attractive, and the colors of the display set it off. I purchased it for a bedroom nightstand clock and in that respect I've been slightly disappointed. The reasons for the disappointment are two-fold. The first problem is there is no ajustment for how bright the clock display is, and my wife is constantly complaining how bright it is in the room. The second problem is also annoying, as the brightness "pulses" up and down. It feels like we have an old store neon light in our room as the brightness keeps changing every 15 seconds. I don't know what the purpose of this is but it is annoying. During the day though, the display is harder to see. There are 2 reasons for this, the one is the brightness is not bright enough, the second is there is a very limited point of view. If you move to the right or left of the clock the display becomes limited. If you are right in front of the clock the display is fine, go back 10 feet though and it is hard to make out. Other then these complaints, the quality is fine, it was an easy setup and the remote unit for the weather along with the atomic clock feature worked flawless. Overall, for the money, it is a decent product.

We had some trouble getting the thing to work in the first place. had to uninstall a couple of times with our Windows XP computer, and then had to resent the remote device a couple of times.
but then, we upgraded to Windows 7 and the thing doesn't work at all. They say it cannot be compatible with Windows 7. Needless to say, we are not pleased. They didn't see Windows 7 coming?????

Harnessing the power of MSN Direct Weather Service, the WeatherNow II from Oregon Scientific offers weather information and forecasts without the need for remote outdoor sensors, elaborate setup, or a computer connection. Plug in the device, and WeatherNow II automatically receives an FM radio signal from MSN Direct and begins displaying time/date and current local outdoor conditions. It also has readouts for the current day’s forecast, high and low temps, chance of precipitation, and weather predictions for the next three days. It is the perfect devise for anyone interested in a home weather station but not the complications of involved programming or setup.
To help with real-world planning and preparations, the WeatherNow II’s LCD screen also shows a “feels like” temperature, which factors in wind chill and the heat index, for a more accurate description of actual outdoor conditions. The display automatically toggles back and forth between the “feels like” reading and a UV-index display, providing the day’s UV conditions from low to extremely high. Four-day forecast conditions are shown in 12 different graphic icons, indicating clear, partly cloudy, cloudy, rain, snow, thunder, dust, fog, haze, smoke, windy, or frigid. In addition, trend arrows show whether temperature and humidity are rising, falling, or holding steady.
Alongside its detailed weather information, WeatherNow II also includes clock and calendar readings, as well as sunset time, indoor temp, and signal reception. Other features include an alarm with snooze and a backlight for viewing in the dark. The unit comes with an AC adapter, but can also run off four AA batteries, not included, as a backup power source in the event of an electrical outage. Oregon Scientific’s contract with MSN Direct runs through December 2011.

Oregon Scientific Multi-Room Indoor-Climate Monitor w/Atomic Clock plus Weather Forecaster - RMR500A Review

Oregon Scientific Multi-Room Indoor-Climate Monitor w/Atomic Clock plus Weather Forecaster - RMR500A
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have an older home that had some mold issue we had to correct when we moved in. I have a weather stations and various temp/humidity sensors in the house but wanted a centralized unit that could display temp and humidty. The temp and humidty are very accurate (I used my high end Davis unit to compare data) from the base unit and remote sensors. I have been able to determine that having the bathroom exhaust fan for 10 min after a shower is inadequate. With this sensor, I know it needs to run for 20-30 minutes to bring the humidty below 60% again. Having this data was vital to prove to my wife that she needs to keep that fan on, which she hates doing otherwise.
I have had no issues with the display clarity and think there is adequate backlight when the button is depressed.
There are a few cons:
1) Unit lacks a max/min for temperature or humidity. I found this very surprising since Oregon Sc. has this on their other units that sell for much less. There's merit for keeping things simple but this was just being cheap on their part.
2) There is no trend indicator showing if temp & humidity are rising or falling. Again, this would have been very easy to program into the main display, but I'm getting picky.
3) Additional remote sensor prices are unreasonably inflated. This is just robbery. For the price of 2 additional sensors, you could buy a new unit with 2 remote sensors (unfortunetly, the outside doesn'ty let you change the transmission channel).

Monitor temperature and humidity levels throughout the house and outside and receive mold alerts all from the convenience of one display with this multi-room climate monitor from Oregon Scientific. The display monitor shows temperature and humidity levels in the room where it sits, and also receives temperature and humidity data from up to 3 remote wireless sensors set up in key areas around the house: the baby's room, the wine cellar, music room, greenhouse, basement or wherever proper temperature and humidity levels are a must. Each room's temperature and humidity data is divided into easy-to-read segments on the large LCD display. The unit also displays the likelihood of dangerous mold growth with a built-in mold alert function.
More great features include outdoor temperature and humidity and weather forecasts for the next 12-24 hours. Weather Forecasts are presented with easy-to-read graphical icons: Sunny, Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, Rainy and Snowy. The radio-controlled atomic clock sets itself for precision time, reliable date and for automatic Daylight Savings Time adjustments where applicable. An LED backlight means easy viewing at night. Great for the desktop or easily mounted to any wall, the sleek design dresses up any room in the home or office.

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WD-3209U 4 Day Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster with Forecast Alerts and E.L. Backlight Review

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WD-3209U 4 Day Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster with Forecast Alerts and E.L. Backlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have looked far and wide for a decent & usable weather station and unfortunately this one was not it. From the list of features it seemed like it would do the 3 simple seemingly simple tasks I needed it to do:
1. Display the current Indoor & Outdoor Temperature at the same time.
2. Quickly give me a preview of the day's weather so I can dress accordingly.
3. Have a self-setting alarm clock that can be read at night.
Honestly for $120, I was amazed at how badly this unit failed at all three.
It does display the indoor temperature in the upper right hand corner, but the outdoor temperature is only displayed every 20 seconds or so. There is a button that you can press to briefly display the outdoor temperature, but you have to press fairly hard and since the unit is light weight, you normally have to pick it up to avoid pushing it across the table. The main display (where the weather is forecast) cycles through several different screens; telling you the temperature for the morning, the middle of the day and the evening. Then the unit cycles through the wind speed & directions, wind gusts, etc. You have to spend about a minute or so watching the thing hoping to catch the information you are interested in. Unfortunately there is no way to set it to display only the information you want to see and skip all the rest.
Finally I spent the extra money for this model because it has a backlight so that it can be read at night. You have to press a button for it to come on, but it is oddly placed so you have to fumble around in the dark, knock the thing over, pick it up, fumble & find the button to see what time it is. And on top of all that, the contrast on the LCD screen is not adjustable. This unit is meant to be placed on a countertop and read from a standing position. It is not visible from across the room or if you are at the same level as the display. So if you plan on sitting this on your night-stand, you won't be able to read it. (I have perfect 20-20 vision by the way.)
Bottom line: It takes so much time to find out the information you want from this thing, you might as well turn on the TV. What is supposed to be a wealth of information at a glance, is just frustrating to use.
I sent mine back after a week.

Springfield Precision Instruments 14" Metal Garden Thermometer with Clock and Hygrometer Review

Springfield Precision Instruments 14 Metal Garden Thermometer with Clock and Hygrometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very attractive thermometer/hygrometer/clock. The only problem (and it's a major one) is that it is rarely accurate in terms of temperature. I have it mounted in the shade as suggested but nevertheless, during the day it usually reads about 10 degrees hotter than it actually is during the summer. It is closer to accurate when the sun is down, but still not right. I'll be curious to see if it is more accurate in winter. Also, the hygrometer seems to be accurate most of the time, but on a few occasions it has read zero humidity on fairly humid days.
I find it humorous that the manufacturer has the word "precision" in their name.

Chaney Instrument 18-Inch Copper Clock and Thermometer Review

Chaney Instrument 18-Inch Copper Clock and Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this clock and put it up outside in an unobstructed area, hanging on a wooden fence. It seemed to get a great signal, but about a week after purchase it lost 15 minutes, and didn't recover it.
Went through the reset procedure, 10 days later, same problem, lost 45 minutes, didn't recover it.
By now I'm past Amazon's 30 day return window, so I go to the manufacturer's web site and submit a support request. Only guess what? Their support request page is broken! I submit my info and get this:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e10'
No value given for one or more required parameters.
/pgs/email2.asp, line 36
This, in layman's terms, is lame. First off, rule one is that you catch all errors on your web page and give people a readable explanation of what went wrong. Second, they've just opened the door for hackers by letting then know what SQL server they are using, the fact that they are using ASP, and have provided some info about where their scripts are located.
Stupid. Nothing to do with the clock, but a company that doesn't know how to provide customer support might be one you want to steer clear of for ANY product.
In any case, the performance of the clock is UNSATISFACTORY, the company support is UNSATISFACTORY, and I recommend that under no circumstances do you buy this product.

Timex TX5170 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Indoor Hygrometer and Clock Review

Timex TX5170 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Indoor Hygrometer and Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After one week of normal use the Timex TX5170 stopped functioning: The readout displayed random digits. The battery tested fine (1.5 volts on my voltmeter), but I decided to give the TX5170 the benefit of the doubt, so I went out and bought a new alkaline AAA battery and installed it. And, lo and behold, the TX5170 sprang back to life -- for six hours. Then it gave up the ghost completely. Installing ANOTHER new alkaline battery did no good.
I once met a retired advertising executive who purported to be the guy who came up with Timex's classic slogan, "It Takes A Licking But Keeps on Ticking." My problems with the Timex TX5170 recalled this slogan to my mind. "Perhaps that's the problem," I said to myself. So I covered the TX5170 with chocolate syrup and proceed to lick it. Alas, still only random digits in the readout. [Just kidding.]
The online product description states that the TX5170 is covered by "Timex's one-year warranty." That sounds good, only the "instruction manual" included with the unit does not mention a warranty, nor does it provide any contact information for the manufacture. The fine print on the back of the unit itself states that it was manufactured in China for the Maverick Corporation of Edison, New Jersey, and that the name "Timex" is used under license in the United States and certain other territories.
Very helpful.
So the question is, how much time and effort am I going to expend to gain satisfaction for a non-functioning fifteen dollar thermometer?

They say it's not the heat, but the humidity. Well fret not, because the versatile Timex TX5170 electronic thermometer displays both at the same time. The compact unit--which sits unobtrusively on a desktop, table, or shelf--sports a three-line LCD panel with bold, conspicuous readouts. The top line displays the indoor temperature, the middle line displays the outdoor temperature, and the bottom line shows either the indoor relative humidity or the time, depending in your preference. As a result, you can instantly gauge whether to wear shorts or pants on a seemingly mild summer day, make sure the humidity level is correct in the greenhouse, or crank the air conditioner as the afternoon progresses. The temperature readings range from 32 to 122 degrees F (0 to 50 degrees C) for the indoor temperature to -4 to 158 degrees F (-20 to 50 degrees C) for the outdoor temperature. The relative humidity, meanwhile, is measured on a scale of 20 to 90 percent, with the hygrometer performing best between 40 and 70 percent.
The display is remarkably easy to read--even from across the room--thanks to the bold digits and crisp readout. At the same time, the TX5170 includes an integral minimum/maximum memory function that records the high and low temperatures of the day. The values are available at the push of a button, with a second button clearing and resetting the memory on command. Best of all, the unit is notably compact at 2.88 by 5.44 by 0.81 inches (W x H x D), making it a great choice for home offices, backyard greenhouses, and everywhere in between.
The TX5170 comes with a wired, weather-resistant temperature probe (with a 10-foot cord) for gauging the outdoor temperature, along with an integral folding stand. Because of the wired probe, the main unit will need to located near a window to enjoy the outdoor temperature functions. And should you want to mount the unit on a wall rather than place it on a shelf or desk, simply suspend it from its rear hanger hole (you'll need to provide the nail or screw). As a final bonus, the TX5170 is streamlined and attractive, with a sleek white plastic housing and a snazzy seven-button control panel on the front.
The TX5170 requires a single AAA battery (not included) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

We just built a free standing roof over out back door. We have hung this up under the roof where we can see if from the house or on the patio, itself. I love the Barometer. You can see the humidity @ a glance. Nice big face so you can easily see it. The other big selling feature was that it is a Timex. This is very easy to set and you are ready to go in minutes.

Chaney Instrument 18-Inch Aged Metal Clock and Thermometer Review

Chaney Instrument 18-Inch Aged Metal Clock and Thermometer

I have owned this clock for 1 1/2 years. We mounted it outside in our pool area mostly shaded from the sun, but still exposed part of the day. We take it inside during the winter months. This is the second summer season we were to use it. I installed new batteries and monitored its timekeeping accuracy indoors for a few days before mounting it outside. It worked for about a week once mounted outside and then began losing time dramatically. Back up on the ladder, I pulled it down and again took it inside. I readjusted the time and I've been monitoring it now for a few days. It seems to keep perfect time indoors. So, I would recommend this clock only as an indoor clock. Even without constant direct sunlight, it does not keep time accurately outdoors.

Great clock for indoor use. Can only be used outdoors, if kept warm and dry. All advertising states it's weatherproof. The owner's manual and manufacturer website state otherwise. Very disappointed as I purchased specifically for outdoor use.

La Crosse Technology WS-8418AL-IT Atomic Digital Wall Clock with Moon Phase Review

La Crosse Technology WS-8418AL-IT Atomic Digital Wall Clock with Moon Phase

Over the past 2-3 years I have bought 6 of these clocks/thermometers.
Two as gifts and one for myself.
I really only wanted to buy three, but in the first 3, the outdoor thermostat failed for each of them after about a year.
New batteries and resets did not fix the problem.
So I ordered 3 more clocks, thinking at first that I had just gotten a lemon.
(I tried to find just the outdoor unit, but it is hard to find and costs almost as much as the whole unit.)
Out of these next 3, 2 of them had a failing outdoor thermometer within a year.
The last one I ordered has been working for well over a year.
In 5 of the 6 cases, the outdoor thermostat was mounted in a porch and was not directly subjected to the weather.
The atomic clock and the indoor thermostat on all of these have always worked well.
They have never given a problem.
But the outdoor thermostat is not reliable. And that was a main reason for buying this unit.
I cannot recommend it.

This atomic wall clock from La Crosse Technology not only gives the precise time, but presents it in an extra large digital display for easy viewing from across the room. Radio-controlled by the national atomic clock, the WS-8418AL clock regularly resets for accuracy and adapts automatically for daylight savings time. The thermometer provides indoor and outdoor temperatures for comfort inside and beyond the house walls.
Bordered by a sleek, aluminum frame, the square clock face features two rectangular LCD screens and four small buttons for setting the clock and shifting modes and time zones. The top screen displays time in extra large digits in either a 12- or 24-hour format. A radio icon indicates the strength of the WWVB signal. Outside the signal’s range, users can manually set the time. The clock also offers an alarm function with snooze. In the lower LCD, the clock conveys the temperatures and date information, and one of twelve icons to signify the moon’s present phase. The day of the week can be relayed in English, French, German, or Spanish, while both Celsius or Fahrenheit temperature readings are possible. The clock measures indoor temperatures from 14 to 100 degrees F. For outdoor data, a TX37U-IT sensor is included, communicating at a 915 MHz frequency from up to 330 feet. The sensor registers a range of -31.9 to 139 degrees F. To power the clock and sensor, the separate purchase of four AA batteries is required. A one-year limited warranty covers this item. The clock measures 10-1/4 inches wide by 1-1/5 inches deep by 9-3/4 inches high and the sensor 1-1/2 inches wide by 4/5 inches deep by 5 inches high.
