Alessi Kitchen Timer by Michael Graves Review

We bought the red Alessi timer because it would have been a perfect fit for our kitchen. But, we had trouble getting it to work right and we're pretty sure that we broke it while messing with it. We're really not rough people; it just seems that the timer is much too easy to break. (Note: We learned that this timer must be turned all the way to 60 and then back to the time you want. The instructions don't say that. The timer still didn't work for us, but we think it was already broken by the time we learned about that.)

I went to buy this item at Walmart for $79.00 and lasted only for 5 months - the extractor fan stopped working so now everytime I heat something for 2 minutes (3 minutes and the oven overheats), the interior gets full of vapor, no way to use it normally, causing the microwave to overheat and turn off for several minutes. The customer service is useless - everytime I'd tried to call i get this final message '...all of our X are busy..., good bye' --- zero contact with a living person. To get it repaired you need to send it to California, and then pay $15 to get it back. Don't buy, be sure to check the brand you buy has a local service center.

Maxi-Matic Elite Cuisine 4-Slice Toaster Oven Broiler Review

Maxi-Matic Elite Cuisine 4-Slice Toaster Oven Broiler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is getting harder to find a good small toaster oven at almost any price. We had a GE toaster oven that was purchased in the late 1970's. It fit on a 10' deep shelf and took very little space. The rack pulled out when the door was opened had a shiny chrome interior which made great toast and it lasted almost 30 years. When it finally died, we looked for a replacement. The only one that fit in the space we wanted looked almost the same as our old GE. It was a Black and Decker unit and it only lasted a year before the top element burnt out. It also was built very cheaply.
We shopped around and read some good reviews on the Maxi Matic. Price was good and it actually didn't have a cheap feel to it like the B&D. It makes great toast. Heats up fast and is easy to clean. It has quartz elements that seem pretty sturdy. That is the good part. The trade off is that the toasting is regulated by a timer, not a sensor. There isn't a temperature control for baking. The heating elements do not turn off when the door is opened. This is a very basic unit. The switch on top is for off- top element-bottom element or both elements(toast) The bottom is just a timer that ticks very loudly and is maxed at 15 minutes and has markings for light, medium and dark toast. (Use light or it comes out burnt)
If you need a toaster oven in a small space this is a decent unit. What's sad is that all the toaster ovens in this category are crappy compared to what was available 20 years ago. Price wasn't an issue. They are all crappy

Fox Run Retro Kitchen Timer with Magnet, Red Review

Fox Run Retro Kitchen Timer with Magnet, Red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a fun little kitchen timer! Just make sure you get one that's reliable and works properly and you're good to go. Has a nice, loud bell. You can hear it in the next room unless you have your music blasting or your vacuum cleaner on.
The first one I received from Amazon would stop ticking even though I followed directions for turning the dial past the 55-minute mark and then setting it to the number of minutes I wanted. I would set it at 30 minutes or 45 minutes and it would tick briefly, then stop. But it was accurate at shorter times of 5 or 10 minutes; it would tick down and the bell would go off.
Due to its unreliability, I returned it to Amazon for an exchange of the same model. That one had the same defect.
This time I contacted the manufacturer, Fox Run Craftsmen. They sent me a replacement that has worked beautifully!
My advice is, if you get one that doesn't work, contact Fox Run Craftsmen for a replacement.
Now that I have a working one, let me say it is the cutest kitchen gadget ever! I like the fire engine red color! The size is depicted accurately as "actual size" in the photo at just about 3 inches in diameter, so it is small. The magnet is strong. It looks great on my refrigerator!
Recommended. (With above caveats.)

Polder Dual Sensor Thermometer and Timer Review

Polder Dual Sensor Thermometer and Timer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although this is a few bucks more than some other probe thermometers, there is a nasty little secret those others usually keep hidden until you buy them and start reading the fine print in the manual: they can only be used up to temperatures of something like 375. That rules out the whole reason I want the thing--roasting, where I pretty much always have at least some period of cooking above that temperature.
In contrast, this beauty has a range up to 572, along with a much heavier, less kinky cord than my old Taylor.
Just that would be plenty to sell me on this model, but wait... there's MORE! In addition to telling you the temperature of your food, it has a separate sensor that gives a readout of the oven temperature. Since home ovens almost always run a bit off from the set temperature, this is critical. It's a real joy to get the temperature reading from the *outside* of the oven, rather than trying to read it off a grimy, unreliable dial thermometer that you probably knocked to the bottom of the oven when you put your pans in anyway.
On top of all that, it also includes a timer. No more accidentally clearing your timer when you go to use the microwave!
Because this replaced two separate thermometers in my oven, it actually works out to be the cheaper option. But even if it were more, I'd still recommend it for the convenience and because it (so far, at least) seems to be of a markedly higher quality than the competitors.

Emerson MW8991SB 0.9Cu.Ft. 900 Watt Touch-Control Microwave Oven, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

The other reviewer is incorrect about the microwave's (in)ability for specific cooking time input. All you have to do is hit the Power Level button first, then the numbers will allow you to input any time you want, 8 seconds or 45 seconds or whatever. I have the same 8992sb that the other reviewer has.
I've had the microwave for 3 months, and for the most part it has worked very well and is very easy to operate. One minor flaw is that the Popcorn button, when pressed once, defaults to settings for a 1.75 oz bag of microwave popcorn. This is the "mini" bag size that isn't very common. Most microwave popcorn comes in a slightly larger bag, and to set for that you have to push the Popcorn button TWICE to get to the correct setting. This is counter-intuitive, as the majority of microwave popcorn on store shelves is the larger size. It took me a few bags of popcorn to figure that out, and I had a LOT of unpopped kernels until I looked back at the manual and then at my box of popcorn to see that the microwave doesn't default to the most common size. But that's minor.
The major flaw with this microwave is WHERE IS THE KITCHEN TIMER? Most new microwaves nowadays have a kitchen timer. The store where I bought this microwave lists that it has a kitchen timer. This site lists that it has a kitchen timer, and this microwave has the exact same button display as mine. The owner's manual does NOT list a kitchen timer. I have pressed every button on the thing, and there is no timer. I tried adjusting the power level from 1 - 10. Power level 1 still turns on power, and there is no Power Level 0.
I used the kitchen timer on my old microwave all the time. When I bought this one, multiple sources listed it having a kitchen timer. But there is no timer. If I had known before I bought this microwave that it had no timer function, I would NOT have bought it.

DeLonghi DO400 1400-Watt Digital Control 4-Slice Toaster Oven Review

DeLonghi DO400 1400-Watt Digital Control 4-Slice Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to have a much larger toaster oven, but having subsequently bought my first microwave, when the big toaster oven died, I looked for a smaller toaster oven to free up some counter space. I've had this for about a month, and I think it's quite good for what it is, but for what it is, it's overpriced. If it were cheaper I'd rate it higher. It broils beautifully. The oven heats very quickly, which is great. By my measurements, it's about 50 degrees above the requested temperature in middle ranges, as has been noted by others. But small toaster ovens are always unreliable on precise temperature. That's why all those frozen foods that come in microwave containers say don't cook them in a toaster oven (which you can do just fine, by the way, if you know how far off the temperature is). I prefer toast a little lighter than it makes toast at T-1, but it's okay. I miss features like the hook pull-outs, which not only pull the shelf out when you open the door but keep the door from crashing up and down, and the pull-out, rather than drop-down, crumb drawer. It's a perfectly adequate small toaster oven, but it should be either a little better or a little cheaper.

An efficient alternative to turning on the oven, this 1400-watt countertop appliance provides user friendly digital controls that make it easy to bake, broil, toast, or keep food warm. Its 1/3-cubic-foot capacity will accommodate individual pizzas, casseroles, or up to four slices of bread, bagels, or English muffins at a time. In addition, the unit's toast-color selector with automatic shut-off allows for choosing from light to dark settings, and its adjustable temperature control makes it easy to cook with the right amount of heat. For precise and consistent results, press the quick-check button to view the current oven temperature anytime during the cooking process. Other highlights include a drop-down crumb tray for easy disposal of crumbs, a removable bake pan and broil rack, and an attractive design that will nicely complement any kitchen decor. Great for cooking up breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the toaster oven measures 11-1/4 by 16 by 8 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty against defects.

Average Reviews:

The magnet on the back was so weak that the clock kept falling off the oven. After a few falls, the back popped off, and I found that the mechanism inside is mostly plastic, and fitted in so close to the edges of the case that any distortion will cause it to stop running. The back was also made from metalized plastic, which is why it came off so easily, and two large steel nuts were glued inside, presumably to add weight so that it feels like a quality product, which it is not. I would guess that most other mechanical kitchen timers use the exact same movement, this one just has a more durable looking case.

Sharp R-230KK 800-Watt 4/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Microwave, Black Review

Sharp R-230KK 800-Watt 4/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Microwave, Black
Average Reviews:

I bought this Microwave to replace an older Sharp model. I have had very good luck with Sharp Microwaves and this new one is no different. It's a very good compact microwave for one or two people. It was very easy to set the clock and use right out of the box. I love the look of it. The buttons are very simple to use. I don't use my microwave for cooking that much, I use it mostly for reheating and defrosting. I am a single mom with one teenage son who never eats at the same time as I do so it comes in very handy. I do sometimes cook bacon and pototoes in it. It makes great baked potatoes. It you have more than two people in your family you might want to get a larger oven. I have been using Sharp microwaves for many, many years, they make a great product. I highly recommend this model and all Sharps for that matter.

When I ordered this timer, it was initially back ordered. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived within just a few days.
It works perfectly by keeping extrememly accurate time. It passed the cookie baking test with flying colors. The magnetic backing is perfect for sticking to any surface at any angle.
The ad for this timer isn't specific and pictures it in a way that implies it is much larger than it actually is. Be aware that it is small, which works for my tiny workspace.
Overall, I am very pleased with my cute little retro timer!

Polder Cooking Thermometer with Timer and Clock Review

Polder Cooking Thermometer with Timer and Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great item to have in your kitchen. It makes cook so much easier. You can tell exactly when a roast is done or a chicken is cooked to a high enough temp.
You can set the clock to beep at a certain time, or at a set temperature. I like that it has a magnet on the back. I'm able to store my unit on the refridgerator and use it as a timer too.
It is a small unit and that makes for easy storage.
Although I haven't had any problems with mine yet, I'd just be warned that all over the directions it talks about the damage that water and other liquids can cause. I'm very careful with my unit, but I can see how, with very little effort, it can be ruined by liquids.
I did some research before buying this. I found that there were cheaper ones out there that won't work as well or may have more problems. I also found better quality ones that don't seem so fragile, but they were also much more expensive. For the money, I thought this was one of the best buys.
If something did happen and I ruined this one, I'd buy a new one with out hesitation. It is just that useful to have around.

I have only owned this product for a week, however it appears to work nicely. The best part of this timer is its design. Everyone who has seen it loves it.
One note about functionality: To operate this timer, you have to pull the "tape" all the way out (60 mins) then you use an adjustment wheel on the bottom to retract it to the time you want. The unit will only work if operated this way. I did not find this to be a negative, but it is a bit more work than you would expect just from looking at it.

Polder Original Cooking All-In-One Timer/Thermometer Review

Polder Original Cooking All-In-One Timer/Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the Polder 362-90 for about 5 years. I purchased it after seeing Alton Brown using one on the Food Channel show "Good Eats". Now, I'd be lost without it. It takes all the guesswork out of roasting chicken or turkey or a roast beef or whatever else you care to cook in your oven.
You insert the metal probe into whatever you're cooking, set the target temperature and start roasting. When your roast reaches the desired temperature, the Polder will beep to let you know. Perfectly cooked. No wiggling Mrs. Chicken's legs, no pressing on the roast, no "Gee, is it done? I'm not sure." It couldn't be easier.
It has a countdown timer (but not a clock) as well. The back of the main unit has 2 strong magnets which allow it to be attached to any metallic surface, vertical or horizontal. The LCD pivots, so no matter where you put the unit, you can tilt the LCD to make it easy to read. A slide switch on the back allows you to change between Farenheit and Centigrade.
When you wash the probe, you *must* be careful. The probe is a metal tube that contains a temperature sensor. At the point where the cable from the main unit enters this tube, it is sealed merely by crimping the tube. It isn't waterproof. So during washing, if you allow water around this area, it will find its way into the tube and kill the sensor. This is the basis, I believe, for many of the complaints regarding the probe's fragility.
I wrap my hand tightly around the top of the probe when I wash it to prevent this from happening, and I'm still using the original. I use it at least twice a month, so that means it has been used at least 100 times and washed 100 times and it works fine. As far as complaints that the sensor is inaccurate, I've got 100+ perfectly cooked chickens, turkeys and roast beefs that contradict that assertion.
If I have a complaint its that the thing has no on/off switch! Its always running and, therefore, draining the AAA battery. This is not a big deal. The first battery lasted about 3 years and the one in it now has about 2 years of use and is still going strong. When the temperature reads "LO", that is the indicator that the battery needs replacement.
The Polder 362-90 allows you to know when your roast is done instead of guessing at it. I find it essential and I recommend it. Just be careful when you wash it.
***UPDATE 6/2010: After 10+ years of faithful service, my Polder finally quit working. I immediately ordered another. The new one worked accurately twice and then began to underreport temperature by about 30 to 40 degrees F. I tried a backup probe and a new battery with the same result so it would appear to be a problem with the main unit and not the probe. I see that many of the most recent reviews for this product complain of a similar issue. I think Polder may have a manufacturing problem. I would defer purchasing this product until the reviews turn positive again.

An ultra handy and high tech thermometer, the Polder takes a lot of the guesswork out of cooking. It has a pre-settable alarm that works simultaneously with temperature as well as time. The pre-settable alarm temperature range is from 32 to 392 degrees F, and the alarm is a loud 5-minute alarm. It comes equipped with a longer probe wire measuring 43 inches long. The unit requires one AAA battery for power, and one battery comes included. It also comes equipped with memory for frequently used settings. The Polder makes a great gift idea for any kitchen enthusiast.
